Chicken math

My classroom hatch went great! I asked for one dozen eggs half leghorn and half bantam mystery birds. They gave me 12 leghorn and 8 bantam. A total of 15 hatched! A few were unfertilized or died early on and one died at about 19 days. :(

I managed to find homes for 6 of the chicks. Three of which did not last the weekend due to poor handling. I am kicking myself for not doing a stronger background check on the adoptive parents.

That leaves 9 chicks in my second bedroom. I was only planning on keeping 3-4 birds. I already have 5 adult hens pecking around the backyard. Looks like I have a full house now.

How long do you keep the cockerels before culling them? I cant have roosters in my neighborhood.
As soon as we realize they're not what we want to keep...Craigslist them!

Bought 6 last year....3 Production Reds and 3 B.O. ...One Red was a mean rooster, off to the special farm.....one B.O. has a catastrophic first lay and ends up at the special farm too :( . Down to 4 but wanted 6 for the first couple years. Off to the feed store, want 4 Brahmas after much research (cant mess up the matched pair thing we got going), but got there and thought Easter Eggers (sold as Ameraucaunas pshhhh) would be fun to have some colored eggs, used restraint and decided 2 Brahmas and 2 Easter Eggers.....6 chickens for the first couple years is now at 8 if the chicks stay healthy and the possible roo is sweet. Now sure this is 2 more than I planned but since I wanted 4 Brahmas and instead cut back to two I am 2 less then I could have been up. That means I should reward myself by going and getting the Maran chicks from the breeder I found in town right?

Babies hatching as we speak, now add that to 21 layers, 2 roos, 2 capons, and 27 other chicks of varying ages, PLUS an order of 25 more coming in July (that doens't even count what I'll hatch in between.......I'm in deep

Talk about some weird chicken math, we order 20 for this week, got an "updated order" email, it's now up to 43 arriving Monday with 20 more due end of month...Yeehaa!!!!

I was stressed out this am due to various things.... My son asked me what was wrong? Told him I was in the middle of a nervous breakdown, I needed space. He said "Hurry MOM!, Order more chickens!"

*steps forward* hi. I'm Jen and I'm a chick-a-holic.

I was just going to get 6 chicks and 6 ducks, one little coop and a small run.

A little over a month later, I have 8 ducks, and 43 chicks for meat, eggs, and selling pullets. :hmm my one little run and coop is becoming a quarter acre of my land and a super coop. Plus building a pond for the ducks.

And my SO totally is an enabler. Always says yes to new chicks, and is helping build the runs and coops.

This is a dangerous relationship.:love

Hi Jen, welcome to the group of those married to enablers! Dunno about you but here, neither of us offer or attempt any kind of personal or spousal restraint!

What's unique about this illness is when someone else becomes afflicted, I laugh and feel no guilt!
