Chicken math

My flock is growing :) my initial 10 chicks are growing beautifully, and with all the cockerels we got I knew we would have to thin the flock. (Apologies if you have heard this part of the story before) Our original plans were to get rid of all but one cockerel. Then my wife decided she loved a second guy, and to balance the flock better I got 9 more chicks (sold as pullets).

YESTERDAY, my wife came out to look at our chickens, and decided we just have to keep one more boy lol. I need to balance the boy/girl ratio again! In two weeks my little Australops will be 6 weeks and my brooder will be empty again.

What to do...

Just sayin................... These are the ones on sale cheap cheap cheap lol.

We started with 6 a couple years ago (only wanted 3 but had to buy 6 minimum ), bought 3 the next spring, then 8 in the fall. Lost the original 6 to a raccoon.

Then came the incubator...

Although we sold several from the first couple hatches, we ended up getting a 2nd incubator and, long story short, we now have 50 and 14 more in the incubator we bought from someone else.

I never thought we would get caught up in the whole chicken math thing, but 3 coops and 50 chickens later...soon to be 64, I think I can safely admit we have a problem! :)

This is my first year with chickens. I started out wanting a small number like 3 or 4. I ended up with 11 layers and 26 meat birds this spring/summer. That was after i gave 6 to a friend! Thank goodness my husband is a patient man with excellent carpentry skills

I'm looking forward to playing with crosses. No one breed seems to be exactly what I want (darn NNs swooping in and making me want you at the last minute, but being small-ish and having a comb type I don't want), so I'll be having oodles of fun XD

Maybe starting out crossing NN and Giants. Then gradually introducing EEs into the mix. Just imagine it....big, naked necked easter eggers XD
