Chicken math

My losses are my own fault. I knew there were some high spots on the fence wire.

Blkjak how is the meat coloring on the white guineas

I dont know yet. Just started with guineas this year. Bought 5 at an auction and have added 9 keets since then. Next year I hope to process some guineas. I have been told that when you order game bird in a restaurant you are eating guinea.

Ok.. In my defence.. Yesterday I sold these three roos $10 for all..

Then last night I saw a local lady was getting out of silkies $5 each so I messaged her about getting her girls.. Ironically she had two.. It wasn't my fault the black one came with extra baggage!!!! (Free I might add)

So I'm -3+4.. But wait!! Then my neighbor stops by and mentioned his Drake recently died.. I just happened to have too many so I give him one!! ( on the left)

So -3+4-1=EVEN!!! Except I got the silkies to be broody!!

But look how perdy!!

i went to get two chickens and ended up with 5.
i'm really sad tho because i did a budget and every chick will cost around 11 dollars a month. and now i have 8 chickens and will be getting a couple more, i will not be going over 10 chickens

how do you pay for your chickens?

I sell my extra eggs and the chickens are supporting themselves at this point.
I charge 4.50 for an 18 pack if they bring a carton or 5 if they do not.

If you give them the kitchen scraps like from trimming veggies or the stuff left on the plate after dinner that will cut some of the cost down. BUT salt is not good for them. I give mine mostly the veggie trimmings as well as radish tops and such.
You can grow radish and seven top turnip in a small space and they LOVE the tops of them. The seven top does not form a turnip but is grown for the greens. It can be done in a pot if you don't have a garden space.

$11 a month???? 50lb of feed is only $11.50 .. I buy 8×50lb feed a month for all my chickens and ducks.. That's $96 in feed. I only worm a few times a year.. And it's <$10 per year.. And I use permithrin concentrate for external parasites.. That's lasted over 2 yrs for a quart <$20..

I have two dogs that's feed is $26 a bag and I buy 2 a month.. That's $52 plus their heartworm and flea that's $16 month ..so $68.. And they give me nothing but sh-t!!

..I have 49 hens although most are still pullets right now I get at least 60 eggs a week. Once they all lay even if slow I'll be getting 210 eggs per week. If I sell those at $2.00 dozen for 17 dozen that's $34 per week times 4 thats $136.. My cost was <$100.. Now if you include time and wear n tear on clothing.. I'm in the hole.. But I enjoy my chickens. If I went out to a movie and dinner with my spouse I could easily go through $100 and have nothing to show for it.

Chicken feed here is 16 a 50 pound bag even for the purina brand. I am still coming out ahead so am able to get them watermelon and other treats that I cannot grow for them.
