Chicken math

Lol... I'm glad I'm not alone...I though 6 would be good...started with Barred Rocks...then some Wyandotte..then some Buttercups caught my eye...then some geese... Oh and I had to have some Cochins and two Ancona caught my eye too...then DH found some Silkies....then I got him some ducks....oh and couldn't resist some guineas..... I'm not allowed to admit how many MORE than 6 we have....but what's 6 more? ROFL ;)

COMPLETELY forgot about my Americaunas and Red Stars...and I snuck in a roo ;)

I didn't think I would be subject to chicken math that bad and if my coop was finished I would already have some laying hens in there that I found on Craigslist near me. I'm completely addicted to all wyandottes I just think they are absolutely stunning and I want more! More!!!!!! I also want a bantam. Just because. Lol

I just started. I went to my local TSC a couple weeks ago to get 6 chicks. I'm down to 5. One passed away a few days after I got them. We just moved ours to the coop last night. My coop is 4X8. But my chicks my be going down the road and getting new ones. Posted pic on here yesterday and was told they looked like Cornish Cross. I want eggs not meat. And was told they all look like Roosters. :( told the lady at TSC I was wanting chickens for eggs. All they had was Stright Run. Asked her what are Stright Runs she said you don't now if your getting boys or girls.

Hello,
Here is my chicken math story. :(
My Icelandic Chicks are 6 weeks old, so took them out of the garage and put them in the coop. Nice weather 70 degree days above 55 at night.
I started with 11, Yesterday morning open door to the run and out they come to see what compost I have and there are 11. Come in at noon from working on the farm and there is a cat, not the barn cat, lurking around the pen, get rid of cat, pen the chicks up at dark and there are only 10!!. WHERE IN THE H E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS is the other bird?! Cat or dog ( the dog knows not to bother them, . . but . . ) had to grab chick and pull through the 2 x 3" mesh. The thing is its not the smallest bird that is missing! I do not see how the big bird could escape, had to be pulled through by something. Had that happen with pheasants when I was raising them in high school.

So my chicken math is going backwards.

However next year we will get some barred rocks and Buckeyes to have as we get our eggs and meat supply started. The Icelandic's are a starter project for my son to learn to responsibility. He is only 3 but thats when I started gathering eggs and feeding the dogs and I turned out ok!

Hope everyone's math is better than mine!!!!

I was gambling on attrition. My goal was 6. PERIOD! One died the first day, so I replaced her immediately! The next morning, another. So I bought 2, then the breed I originally wanted finally came in, so I got two more (still gambling). Well, we now have 9, 4 RIR, 2 Barred Rocks, 2 BEAUTIFUL ISA browns, and a Red Star. Be prepared! They are a joy!

OK, I get it. Started a month ago with 6 Wyandottes, which are all thriving, thank goodness. Now we think one is a cockerel, so I'm on the hunt for a couple of Buff Orps and a couple of Barred Plymoth Rocks. Why? Because years ago I saw a lovely flock of BO's playing in autumn leaves and thought it was the prettiest sight ever, and my Mom and her favorite brother used to raise BPR's back in the 1930's and always talked about them. No very scientific reasons, but as good as any!

So I've figured it out. I'm immune to the disease. I'll admit I'm a first time (actually not really, our family had chickens when I was little but that was a long time ago and doesn't count) keeper of BYC. So I decided and convinced the DW to allow me chickens 2-3 of them for the fresh eggs and so we can have chemical and other yucky stuff free eggs and when they stop doing what they were bought for they can be stew and be replaced........WHAT AN EGGCELLENT PLAN. So I did my due diligence on the umpteen different breeds...oooohhh those are pretty....ooohhhh so are those.....and those.....you guys know how it goes. Well since I'm a first timer I decided I should follow the KISS system only start with 1-3 different breeds......for now (maybe the replacements could be different breeds). So I found the breeds I wanted, buff orps, australorps, speckled Sussex, barred rock, wyandottes, easter eggers (actually the wife wants this kind)....I'm sure I missed a breed or 6 in there as well. Since I want them to be able to free range a little bit I should get a rooster to protect them.....ooohhhh good idea. Went and picked up said chicks on sunday evening......and my plan worked brilliantly I have 2 different breeds and a rooster to watch them.........although I think I multiplied the 2 times the 3 plus the rooster because I have 7......for now. So ya see I'm immune to the chicken math problem.....I just have a problem with regular math.

More Chicken Math 102, Finance Department....So of course all the "big stores" are out of chicks for the season; I just got back from getting some more fencing for the run, and could find NO chicks anywhere. I am hoping to find some about a month old - don't want to go through the brooder thing again right now. At this point I'm out gas for driving to hellandgone hitting all possible places, three hours of my time...and..wait for it...a speeding ticket (no I did NOT see the sign for a school zone, I was looking in the other direction..so 35 in a 25 gets me a ticket. Ouch...). *sigh*. So we go on. Geez. I'm gonna go dig post holes now.

We have 33 right now.
6 layers, and 27 chicks. Some are two weeks, the others one day. We have 26 broilers due to hatch around the 19th so what I've told my husband is that we are simply raising in succession to spread out the work load in culling them.

So far, he's buying into my plan :)

We got 10 and that was ENOUGH. LoL When they're chicks, they have to stay inside and they POOP UP A STORM. haha. Couldn't wait for them to be feathered enough to go out!
