Chicken math

Great News! i talked to the wife last night about our over abundance of cockerels, and how we are only going to end up with 4 chickens at most. She decided she really really really wants to keep my EE chick "Ducky" who is now showing HIS true colors. BUT she already promised my son that we would keep Henry, who is his chicken. We simply can't keep two roosters with only 3 hens, so i told her we would need about 10 hens per rooster to keep them happy. "22 chickens is just too much", she said. "Well, we can get 15 from a hatchery, and half of them will probably turn out to be boys" was my reply. "I'd be ok with 15". YES! "If we want to end up with 15, we should really order 30, then we can give away the extra boys"... I don't think she liked that idea very much, i'll probably have to do that in two batches. Also, she doesn't know that i can order just pullets. Mwahahaha. Progress!

As for the coop situation, our current setup is too small for that many chickens. BUT i have a 10'x18' shed that the previous owner of my house had used as a coop (and thus the seed was planted when we looked at the house). It is currently being used by my inlaws as a storage unit while they stay with us. I told my wife maybe it was time they moved out LOL.

tldr: i convinced my wife that 15 [more] chickens would be OK for now!

I'm TRYING to be subtle with my wife. Last night I baked two of the small cornish rocks with dirty rice ( which she LOVES) and ohhhh so subtlety pointed out how much they cost at the super market..... .then.... you know, it only takes 3 to 4 weeks for them to get to that size and larger...REALLY?? yep... Me: maybe we should get some.. wouldn't have to worry about all the chemicals in the store bought EXPENSIVE ones. And you KNOW YOUR MOTHER WOULD LOVE THEM. oh yea.....diabolical. .he he he

LOL you guys are just diabolical!!!!!!!!! I love it.

I still have the 45 for a few more days.
Maybe I will sell all the young ones, process all the old ones, keep all the bantams and order more big ones.
Cackle hatchery surprise anyone????

I was eyeballing that special earlier today, thinking to myself how in the world i can sell that idea! At any rate, i like the way you think!

I think if i could convince my wife that its OK to eat chickens we raised, it would be easier. At this point they are 'pets' and will never be eaten. My kids, they want to know what "The Flash" tastes like, haha. (he's our Barred Rock that will be leaving us soon)

Just tell her about all the avian influenza and the fact that chicken is going to go up in price because of it and that you will know the ones you raised were not sick when they were processed etc....

Took some convincing here before the hubby would agree to let me process the old ladies. ( I should not call them that he does not like the thought of eating the "old ladies" lol.)

Don't go in heavy on the flu. That's subject to bring up way too many questions! !! The money angle was definitely the direction for me. As for as "murdering " the pets. I solved that problem by letting them pick one (Rabbit) a piece. If another came along they liked ,the "pet" got ate.

While my husband was away this week i had the best hatch ever. 15 ducks, 5 maran x chicks and 7 muscovys. Muscovys are going to a friens. I can hide the chicks. Wonder what he will say when i tell him that i am keeping all the ducks at least until fall.
