oops!! I hope if anybody "turns" me in I hope the inspector understands chicken math!!!
It was hard to just buy 2!! They are so tiny and cute!!!

Silkies are my favourite so I never could get just 2. I think at the moment I have 30. But if I dont count chicks and roos and factor in that they are bantams, I only have 4.

Council limit here is 6. I have 5.
2 isa brown
2 light Sussex, one of which is broody =1 light Sussex
2 araucana, one of which is broody = 1 araucana
2 Pekins = 1 Pekin
2 10 week old lohmann brown pullets and 1 lohmann cockeral, don't count
1 10 week old Australorp cockeral, doesn't count
1 8 week old araucana (suspect cockeral) doesn't count
9 1 day old or less chicks, mix of breeds, sexless, don't count

Total 5 laying hens.

THIS is why the chicken laws tend to be so strict...... It's like they KNOW y'all can't count.

When you get right down to it, the numbers that REALLY count, to your neighbors (and thus for the laws, and enforcement of same) are the number of times your chickens bother them (noise, odors, flies, etc) vs. number of times your chickens benfit them (gifted eggs, etc.)....... a cockerel poops just as much as a pullet, and is noisier, so must count as least as much, if not more....... just sayin' ......

I own 4-1/2 acres of land bordered by a road on two sides. The neighbors all have lots. I have also owned my land for 23 years. The neighbors come and go. If they dislike my chicken math they are free to build privacy fences or move. Preferebly move.:)

Thankfully I have 10 acres with lots of land berween me and neighbors. No chicken laws. Chicken math can rule here with no problem. The neighbors like the chickens, roosters and all!

I don't keep roosters, the ones I have at the moment still cheep and when they do more than cheep they will go to the farm to grow big enough for the freezer, that's all part of hatching eggs, you don't get to choose if it's a boy or girl.
As for the neighbours this is not the city, every other person has chooks, I give them eggs occasionally, but it's not to buy them off, I give them just because. their yappy little dogs make far more noise than even my most vocal hen who you only hear when she's laid.

Count properly and you'll see I actually only have 2 more hens than council permits, I know the animal control guy, he would just shrug his shoulders,
the rest are chicks, I never said anywhere that I'd be keeping them, most only just hatched out!
Also I spend time every day in that pen and the only time it smells is when it's been raining more than normal, if your chickens smell you might want to look into what's causing it because it's not normal

So, the Law is more like a "guideline", if you know the "animal control" guy .... it's really about who you know, as opposed to actually following the Law .........

......

You either follow the Law, or dont't ...... if you don't like the way it reads, and don't wish to be "an outlaw" ..... then work to get the Law changed .......

You most certainly are breaking the letter and spirit of the law in question ......
