That's so great! I couldn't resist Meyers Meal Maker either , I mean, come on, what fun! a suprise breed!
and Female to boot! Heck yeah! let's keep in touch and figure out our suprise breeds! what a joy! my meal maker is the only one I've named. when she comes next Monday 11th I'm going to call her Charity

From what I read, it could be male or female. Suppose to donate meat if male. My meal maker is larger than the other chicks. I am hoping its a pullet though. Charity is a great name for your chick. I got speckled sussex, black jersey Giants, and white leghorn. My mystery chick looks a lot like my hen Dixie did when she was a chick. She is the only dixie rainbow I own. I should've got more, just didn't know how that breed would be. She is awesome.

I'm glad Im not the only one who has a chicken math issue. I talked my hubby into letting me get 3 Icelandics and I came home w 3 + 1 Ice/EE mix. The first thing he said was 'there's 4 in the box you said 3' Im sooooo glad he loves me he also tells me Im a crazy chicken lady and I say yes I am.

I love telling my story of chicken math (cuz I'm crazy too) and it got worse this weekend. I had the wife convinced to get 6. Then i was told we could have 8. So, while I was at the feed store getting the "approved" 6, 2 more jumped in my hand for a total of 8. I counted and decided that I should get 1 more in case of one death or being male even tho they were supposedly sexed. SO, I came home 9 (5 EE, 4 RIR).

Didn't get in trouble

A friend ordered some chicks and needed a few extra for minimum order so I got 3 more (1 RIR, 2 barred rock). Meanwhile Tractor Supply got a whole batch of BR's that she couldn't leave without but that gave her 14 and her brooder only holds about 10, SO, I took 2 more BRs. Unfortunately, the RIR excaped the wire mesh brooder and committed chick suicide by freezing method #2. NOW, I'm up to 13.

Two of my original group turned out to be Cockerels. Was able to rehome one but kept the RIR. Down to "only" 11 hens.

That brings me to this weekend. A friend has too many BR's and one of them is getting pretty testy so I agreed to take 2 to "help" her with her overcrowding problem. Wasn't that nice of me?


Final Count: 3 RIR, 4 EE, 6 BR hens, 1 RIR Cockerel. THAT'S ALL (unless some Welsummers need a home).

Key is having a very tolerant and understanding wife.

Now...I know I brought home 4 baby chicks! Just don't know how this happened. SOMEHOW a baby Cream Legbar Chick pullet made it into the mix! :-D Honey, I've heard of Chicken Math before, but I think this is what happens when you practice "Common

Hahaha for now we'll just be keeping one boy and some girls, since we're renting. But, if we get the house we're trying for.....well, I'll need a fantastic rainbow egg basket

Al I love your story. My hubbys not so much understanding as Ive just wore him down. since it's my responsibility to care for them he only grumbled occasionally like this morn when the chicks flew out of the box and popped on the window sill.

@AlHawk, nice, love your guts. My wife & I both grew up from the city. Wife was born in Ohio grew up in Florida, Hawaii & Australia. We were both never was around chickens.
Couple of springs ago after work I dropped by a store to pick up kitty food for our kids cat. I happened to checked what was chirping in the store. Lo & behold I got 10 fuzz balls in this cute box "for my kids" to my wife's "disgust" & surprise.

Fast forward few months later, We all got the taste of great eggs, so did our friends and coworkers (demand was greater than supply).
The following spring, I convinced her we need couple more chicks for eggs after all I built this chicken mansion. I picked up 2 Rhode Islands & 2 Barred rocks, couple weeks later I picked up 6 more RIRs, while few weeks before, I mentioned to a random customer in the store I wish I got those chocolate dark eggs from Black Copper Marans but don't know where to get them. She took pity on my boyish look

like I wanted to have my first puppy but couldn't. She mentioned that she has a friend that knows a breeder couple of hours away, got my cell # and parted. After I had added 10 in total, I had the text asking how many BCMs do I want? The random customer is 2 hours away and picking up some rare chicks, and they do have some Copper Marans that hatched 5 days prior with good lineage, mind you pricey and not sexed- I might get all roosters or all hens. I texted my wife and told her without mentioning the cost and we agreed to have 4 - one turned out roo few months later and been rehomed.

This year (January) I was looking @poultry catalog online and told my lovely wife we need BLUE or GREEN eggs don't you think? We only have whites, brown, pink and chocolate & speckled colors. Besides our 1st batch of hens are entering 2nd year of laying went to a molt last fall and some still molting. How can she say no to my boyish angelic face

. Little that she knows I have to order a minimum of 15 to keep them warm for shipping, I left that details out since she also agreed we need 2 more of white leghorns when the local store gets them.

So in that batch I ordered Araucana, Ameraucana, Easter Eggers, Black Australorps, Black sex links, & New Hampshires. 3 weeks later after the mail delivery, I picked up 2 leghorns from the store but

theres 6 minimum purchase, so I added 2 Easter Eggers, 1 Speckled Sussex & 1 Plymouth Barred rocks. Grand total = in my fuzzy math there's only 20.
