Wow, I'm so glad she's doing alright. My girl got mauled today, and her wound looks a lot better than you chicken's, so I have some hope now that she'll get through it.

I am glad to see your chicken survived. My poor girl was mauled by a little Chihuahua yesterday. Hard to believe a tiny dog can do so much damage. Unfortunately, my girl didn't make it. I learned from the experience though so will be better prepared if (heaven forbid it happens) in the future. She had crawled under a pile of old 2 X 4's and wasn't moving. I thought she was already dead. Gently lifted her out and wrapped her in a towel and brought her in the house. She was very dirty and her skin was stripped from under her wings clear to her bottom clear across her body. I decided to lay her in the tub and rinse her with a gentle warmish spray with my hand held shower nozzle, seemed to be ok but didn't like it at the end. I poured some hydrogen peroxide over her and rinsed the wound again and removed more dirt from her. I think I should have waited or cleaned her another way. I left her in a bin with a towel under and around her in a large brooding bin in the house and ran to the store to buy some Vetrycin. Came home and sprayed her wound and covered her again with a clean towel. She shook the towel off after awhile and stood up as if she was sleeping on a roost. She seemed to perk up and was doing well, got up and checked her, she wasn't doing well (didn't realize it was due to shock. I sprayed her wound with more Vetricyn. I wish I had known more about shock and stress and symptoms. I maybe shouldn't have gotten her so wet cleaning the wound and should've put the heat lamp (didn't know where my husband had put the lamp) on sooner. Also, maybe given her an aspirin mixture and electrolytes in her water and covered the wound instead of leaving it uncovered. I should have held a teaspoon up to her mouth to get her to drink - I did carefully dip her beak into the water. I don't know if she had any punctures under her wings but pretty much mostly looked like was skinned down to the muscle but not any blood. I think the poor thing died from the shock and trauma and may have had internal injuries if the dog shook her. The dog chased all of my chickens, but thankfully none of the others were hurt, just tons of multi-colored feathers all over my back yard. Two of my hens flew over the back fence and then flew back into my yard when the danger was gone. I didn't find one of my girls until this morning after combing my yard and the neighborhood last night and again at sunrise this a.m. What a horrible experience. Will be dog proofing my metal gate and the neighbor needs to fix her warped gate that the dog escaped through. Feeling very sad. She was a sweet Bantam Buff Brahma and one of my original 3 chickens.
