Chicken Murder... I didn't think it would happen to me.

It's not always safe to get hold of a strange dog, especially while it's in a killing frenzy. Even if the dog is not in a frenzy, you can be hurt. Another forum member has broken bones and is facing surgery because she tried to get hold of a neighbor's dog that was menacing her chickens.

<sigh>...so sorry 8*(.....yup always happens to the other guy....know I'm not looking forward to dealing with anything of the sort. Find Bin Laden, use him to beat the life out of the dog next time and cash Bloody Bin Laden in for 50 mil...sounds like a good ending here.

Oh I'm so sorry. About eight years ago my son rescued a dog from a burning house fire (he is a firefighter) instead of taking the dog to the aspca which is what they normally do he took kept the dog. While home for a visit the dog ran down the road, on the corner a man kept chickens who he never had caged in a run we would often dodge them in the road. None the less chickens running loose, the dog killed one....my son gave the man $25, and said it was the most expensive chicken he has ever had. Sadly my son I think was the only one who learned a lesson, we still after all these years dodge chickens in the road.

Ill gladly dodge chickens over dogs run amok, any day.

Has anyone mentioned getting an electric fence, yet?

No, I don't. The dog shouldn't have been running at large in the first place. The neighor who blamed it on a sleeping baby is grasping at straws.

I wouldn't leave my property while a baby was sleeping either. However, I would make sure I wouldn't have to. I don't know about everyone else, but when I am grounded and can't do anything else (I don't mean grounded as in punished, I mean grounded as in not being able to leave), I make sure I don't have to. I wouldn't go chasing a dog while a bread was in the oven. I wouldn't go chasing a dog while a steak was in the broiler. I wouldn't go chasing a dog when I'm in the shower. Surely, putting a baby down for a nap would be more important than bread, steak or taking a shower. Therefore, letting a dog run amok and saying that 'oh, sorry, my baby was sleeping' is just irresponsible, lazy and negligent.

I don't doubt for a minute you're warning that people would try to exploit that perspective (they play all kinds of cards), but I don't get how it would fly. Parents still have responsbilities, even when their babies are sleeping. You still have to ensure the safety of you and yours, and make sure you and yours aren't hurting others.

But IMOHO, it's just as inadequate as saying, "Well I just don't have any control over them. They come and go as they please". That's what my neighbor says when her dogs come here.

Anyway, hopefully the neighbor will keep a better eye on their dog. I'm assuming this was a first offense, and there *are* good people out there. The initial reaction was probably a knee-jerk reaction. The fact that they came over and apologized and offered to reimburse you might mean they plan on keeping their dog in. One can hope anyway.

I would say $45 per bird at the least. Then the price to have the coop fixed, not for you to do it, but to have it done and the materials. I'm glad the owner is taking blame as that is not often the case. As far as Cmjust0's post, it don't matter if the dog had killed her pet flies. The fact is the chickens were on HER land and the dog was NOT. It don't matter what the dog killed. I really hope everything works out for the best and you and the owner can still be friendly.

The impression I'm getting is there is no fence between the properties. That's the only way I can picture a neighbor's dog running into my yard. The solution is simple in that case: get a fence or at least a higher fence. If, on the other hand, the dog jumped a fence or some other barrier to get into your yard then you need to put that dog on the next flight to North Korea. Let's see how your neighbor reacts to Rin Tin Stew.

Not to split hairs, but that is ONE solution. The BEST (IMHO) would be for the owner to get a fence or a higher fence.
