Hi all,
I'm new to BYC but read your threads frequently and could use some help with my 7 mo old Favaucana from MPC, Negrita.
A week and a half ago I noted her becoming lethargic and standing alone off and on. At the same time another chicken (we have 3 hens in total, it's a small backyard) became broody, which was probably stressful for the other two. She is eating/drinking very little. Her crop is slow, and she's pooping very little. I've been smelling her breath and poop and it smells normal. Her eyes are bright. She's been preening excessively, to the point of irritating the skin around her ears, beak, and spots under the wings.
I took her to the vet, who told me her temperature was fine, no worms in her poop, no mites under the microscope, gizzard felt fine. I'm pretty sure, based on the shell color, that she laid a normal egg the day after the vet visit.
I've brought her inside on and off to monitor her eating/drinking/pooping, but reintegrate her frequently as I note she eats some and will actively forage when she's with the others.
Yesterday I noted her drinking lots of water, but as usual for the week refusing even egg and yogurt. I gave her mealworms and she picks out the bigger grit-like chunks of corn from the regular calcium rich layer feed. I noted that her poop appeared to have congealed egg yolk in it. She was still strong enough to fly up to about hip height.
Today early in the morning her crop was full of water and the little pieces of corn grit she's been eating, and her breath still smells fine (like layer feed). I've been massaging her crop this whole time, and on occasion I hear gurgling from air moving around in her crop or intestines. Her poop from this morning is below, and looked to have some egg white in it, but otherwise was not mucous-y. I gave her a hot bath an hour ago just in case and now she's perched in the bathroom, preening herself, making little chirps from time to time.
Advice as to how to proceed appreciated. I've been reading BYC non stop and I have no idea what's up or how to help her.
Thanks.
