Chicken neck attack!! Help!

@Anabariful be careful of injection site soreness and watch for necrosis... I don't *think* penicillin causes injection site necrosis, but I would talk to Kathy @casportpony about it first... it can be drawn out with a needle and then given orally as well...

I've used it by injection in horses *many* times, and it did not cause any issues with them.

I once asked a vet about giving it orally and she said something like "no, injectable penicillin should not be given orally because it's poorly absorbed".

Another important note... Almost all intramuscular injections should be given in the upper 2/3 of the breast muscle. Something about a renal shunt?

Okay, should I do orally instead of injection? My TSC has 2 kinds of Penicillin. One is the regular liquid penicillin and the other one starts with a "D" and I vaguely remember it being called a pen so maybe it's like a pre-measured injection of some kind? They bought say they are for the same thing. Is there a specific one I should be getting?

Also, what schedule for blue kote, neosporin, flushing with saline? Alternate them? Neosporin in the morning and blue kote at night?

Injectable penicillin *must* be given by injection in the breast, it cannot be given orally.

It only goes in 1/4 inch so get 1/4 to 1/2 inch length. Whatever you get, just insert it 1/4 inch. Procaine penicillin should not be given orally-- it is only for intramuscular injection.

I use a 1" 22 for IM and subcutaneous injections on most birds, and a 1" 25 for banties and chicks. It's been years since I used penicillin, so not sure if it's too thick for a 22.
