Chicken neck attack!! Help!

Okay, should I do orally instead of injection? My TSC has 2 kinds of Penicillin. One is the regular liquid penicillin and the other one starts with a "D" and I vaguely remember it being called a pen so maybe it's like a pre-measured injection of some kind? They bought say they are for the same thing. Is there a specific one I should be getting?

Also, what schedule for blue kote, neosporin, flushing with saline? Alternate them? Neosporin in the morning and blue kote at night?

No, give it as an injection in the upper part of the breast muscle...

Honestly, I have never used blu kote either, lol... I always keep injured ones separate and never had the need for it... I would just apply as needed, use best judgement... eventually you do want it to dry out at some point once healing is well under way...

Injectable penicillin *must* be given by injection in the breast, it cannot be given orally.

Yeah, what she said... :D

IM (intramuscular) Injections

All intramuscular injections should be given in the breast muscle towards the front of the bird. Never give injection in the leg or thigh. Needle should be inserted at a sharp angle and inserted about 1/4". Be careful not to go all the way to the breast bone. Remember to pull back on plunger to check for blood. If you see blood, redirect needle and try again.

Awesome visual!! :thumbsup

Thanks! Do you know that I have never seen anything shorter than 1" (except for insulin needles)?

Me neither! And I get mine from TSC, lol...

I had no idea that you could buy needles and syringes from TSC without a prescription. I was going to ask my dog's vet where I could get them or if I could get some from him.
Now I know, thanks to BYC and the people here who actually know what they are doing with chickens!!!

Most feed stores and co-ops do carry them... *usually* in the large livestock section, ie, cattle/goat/sheep areas... :)

Great visual!! Thank you!!! :D

@Anabariful ---how is your girl doing now?

At bedtime checkup she was doing excellent! Very happy, clucking around, still eating and drinking great. Her stools are back to normal size and color. Her wound looks really good in color, still nice and clean. One part had a deeper red color to it than the rest. I'm not sure if it's bruised or where the skin was destroyed the most? I'm worried about it decaying. How do I know if the skin died? What are the signs to look for? (Probably smell, color, etc?) I can try to get a picture of it. I rinsed it and applied blue kote. Tomorrow morning I will rinse again and do neosporin.

Another tip...

Penicillin is kept in the refrigerator, but you don't want to give a cold injection, so my vet taught to draw up my dose, then slowly warm it by gently rolling the syringe back and forth between my palms, kinda like you do when you rub your hands together to warm them up. Does that make sense?
