Hello, I'm wondering if someone could help. We have a 5 year old chicken who is suddenly unable to walk on her right leg. She keeps kicking it out backwards. I can't find or feel any obvious injury on her foot or her joints. She's eating and drinking. Crop feels fine. Comb is nice and bright red. She looks fine other than her sore leg. I've confined her in a cage with food and water and she's made a nest in the straw rather than the perch.
What would make her kick her leg backwards like this?
I would appreciate any help so much. Thank you.

Hi there, sorry this is happening to you! Did she possibly injure herself getting up and down from the roosts or nesting boxes? Have you checked the bottom of her foot pads for bumblefoot? I have 2 hens that injured themselves jumping down from their 1-ft high roosts, and now they have semi-permanent limps, but are otherwise happy and healthy. As long as she's eating, drinking, pooping, and acting like a chicken, she should be fine for the most part!

I have the exact same thing happening to my 5 year old black sexton girl. I figured it was something neurological??? Looking for answers too! Good luck with yours!

You may want to start your own thread in this same forum so that you get some fresh help. Pictures help a ton!

The first thing asked is what do you feed your chickens, in case it's a vitamin deficiency. I give ours Rooster Booster granules in the feed and every week or two, put Poultry Cell in their water.

There are other causes/diseases that could also cause this, thus why you should make a new post with the details about your hen to get some help and other ideas.
