That's funny. Smart thinking. I have pigs for a similar reason.

Have I mentioned how much I love my neighbors? Great neighborhood, except for the ones right next to us. Figures.

Horsejody I agree that explaining how free running dogs are an issue is best done while being civil & people are more likely to listen. It was nice to see your email was heard & responded to... Good job Jody!

I am not a member of the NRA, but I wonder if they might be willing to help Mr. Harris on the discharging a firearms charge. It appears that this is what the AG is going for. And clearly the man had a right to use a firearm to protect his property. The only sticking point is whether the NRA would not get involve as it was a pellet rifle.

I will attach your email to those reports just to make sure that your legal research does not go to waste.

Glad you did the research for them horsejody! No telling what would have happened otherwise!

If I'm not mistaken, I think it was in Nicholasville, Ky...though I may be getting that confused with my other favorite farmer vs. townies story, which was definitely from Nicholasville..

A Nicholasville farmer made a good portion of his living raising sweetcorn and selling it at markets.. Birds were eating his crop, so he put out "propane cannons," which basically just make an incredibly loud noise to drive the birds away.

As it turns out, it also makes neighbors really mad. They took him to court to try to shut down his propane cannons -- disturbing the backyard grilling atmosphere, I guess..

Pretty sure he used them as long as he needed that year, but then discontinued the next year in lieu of some other form of bird scarer....just to keep the peace.

Mr. Gapp is in need of this information also. It appears he failed to look up the laws to find out what could happen to is beloved dogs should he not follow the law and should they escape his yard.

I sure hope Mr. Harris has no further problems from the justice system after his court hearing.

cmjust0, I love that story too!

I have a friend who several years ago got permission to pick cherries in an old orchard that was overgrown with tall weeds. My friend got a group of interested pickers together and the farmer gave them ladders to use and left them at it. Dave was w-a-a-y up a ladder and he kept hearing a metallic clicking noise, with long pauses between clicks. He didn'y know what it was so he ignored it. The other people were far from him picking in other trees. Oliver suddenly (as John Lennon would say) the propane cannon went off really close by. Needless to say, Dave was scared so bad he fell off the ladder and out of the tree! It probably happened 20 years ago, but his wife still enjoys telling the story.

Unfortunately, too many dog owners are aware of the dog laws (leash laws, etc.) but choose to ignore them because too few have consequences. I'm sure that Mr. Gapp was fully aware of the leash laws, but he chose to ignore them. If he had been told the other laws, he propbaly would have disregarded them and assumed that his angelic dog could do no wrong. Many dog owners feel that their dog is so wonderful that nobody could possibly object to having the little darling in their yard. After all, the little darling can do no wrong and should be loved by all. Irresponsible dog owners always believe that there dogs are above reproach. They always say stupid things like, "The only way he could hurt you is if he licked you to death." I don't know why they say that, but they always do. Well, too many chickens and other pets and/or livestock have been "licked to death" so I hope that all bad dog owners start learning some lessons.
