Oops, I forgot to get back with you, @uzisuzuki ! Sorry about that.

Yes, I would love to see your pictures with and without effects.

You're laying pullet is so cute! I baby mine, too. I went into full on crazy chicken ladyhood pretty fast after my first chicken showed up. :D

Here's 2 examples of Before and After.

My quick tricks for their pictures are:
  • to take them at dusk when I'm putting them up for the night
  • this makes the lighting more "dramatic" - spotlight effect and heavy shadows
  • try not to get the light source in the picture or behind them
  • loosely use the Rule of Thirds
  • take a LOT of pictures
  • cropping to get a better composition

I usually use the Hipstamatic app filters effects to help push the shadows/highlights to make it look more dramatic than it does IRL while I'm taking the picture. Also, it really helps having subjects that will hold still long enough for you to take a picture. I usually end up with about 5 out of 15 that I'll post or keep and take about 20-30 minutes to set them up and take their pictures. My pictures of them outside, during the day, aren't great.

Being able to control the picture conditions, the app filters, and the birds themselves are honestly what makes these pictures decent.

Thank you! I must agree that Cookie is about a 10 on the cuteness scale, but perhaps I'm just biased.

It's so good to know I'm not completely insane by doting on my girls.

You could teach a class on getting good pictures, you know, because you're so knowledgeable and clear. Those are great tricks that I will try to make good use of! One thing I can't do, though, is keep the girls still long enough to snap a lot of good pictures. I actually do take about 110 pictures of everything, and then delete 100 of them, so I guess I've got that down.

I'm glad I'm not the only one, either. :)

I'm trained as an illustrator & I've never taken a photography class. I just apply what I would do with a drawing to any of the pictures I take. Most of the time, I try to just snap a bunch in a row without thinking about what I want it to look like. I like it better when I don't overthink it. But with Memnoch & Mercury, I took advantage of them being willing to stand & pose. That's half the battle. :D

Interesting stuff!

You're right, it's incredibly hard to get a chicken or duck to hold still long enough for a really good picture. I guess their minds are constantly on eating, so that pose a problem for us who want to get photo decent enough to share.

Your birds are lovely, as always. I'm in love with Odysseus!

Alex, he seems to have that effect on people. Much like his namesake. :)

We've had spring like weather all week, so my flocks have been getting some free range time in. Not as much as I would like since I seem to have come down with pneumonia last week & it's just been getting worse this week.

Mercury, a little panicky & lost while being separated from Memnoch. I feel like I should have named them after the Lannister twins from the Game of Thrones books.

This is my mini peafowl flock: Damien is the blue peacock, Richmond is the darker peahen & Dalton is the lighter one. Damien is estimated to be around 1.5 years old & the girls are about 9-10 months now. I brought the girls home when they were about 4 months old, so they haven't gotten a whole lot of free range time since (trying to get them to consider the coop as their home base so they don't disappear on me). Watching the 3 of them explore together has been pretty exciting for me.
