My quick tricks for their pictures are:
- to take them at dusk when I'm putting them up for the night
- this makes the lighting more "dramatic" - spotlight effect and heavy shadows
- try not to get the light source in the picture or behind them
- loosely use the Rule of Thirds
- take a LOT of pictures
- cropping to get a better composition
I usually use the Hipstamatic app filters effects to help push the shadows/highlights to make it look more dramatic than it does IRL while I'm taking the picture. Also, it really helps having subjects that will hold still long enough for you to take a picture. I usually end up with about 5 out of 15 that I'll post or keep and take about 20-30 minutes to set them up and take their pictures. My pictures of them outside, during the day, aren't great.
