re iding boys and girls....I did the string and paper clip thing very well...

But it has to work outdoors in one shed for me and not in the house. In the house there must be some magnet force field as it does wrong.

The other thing I've heard is that you can pat them down their back as young ones and the girls stay down and the boys push up to stand up.

I've counted feathers....sometimes helps but not 100%.

But for 3 years the string thing worked. I'm going to try to set a hatch with the string thing and see if it works.

Rather than hire a chicken ider, I need to be one....Those folks make serious money and they earn it....I wouldn't want to id that way as I could hurt some precious babies!

Let me know if you need more info on the string technique...........my paypal is as follows::::

Have a blessed day...Out to the sunshine to play with the chickies! We had our guinea funeral yesterday from the predator attack. Today we batten down all the hatches as my sainted father would say.

Yep- "trouble"

What kind of incubator?

Big trouble, thats Trouble, with a Capitol "T", and that rhymes with "Me" and I'm an incubating fool!

(Sorry could not resist a little play on 'Trouble' from the Music Man (a musical)

It started with the desire to build an incubator, then buying an autoturner, but finding a used one locally that came with an incubator, and then the realization that multiple incubators could mean non-stop hatching fun, and now I have 3 incubators and I am eyeing the 1588 Genesis Hovabator that cost more than I paid for my car! (Ok, so it was a cheap car, but still) This little chicken hobby is in the hundreds dollars and will break a thousand if I do the Genesis and I should have sent that money to the credit cards, instead of paying 29% interest, but that's why this is the thread for addicts!

Oh, and in my defense, at least I blew the money on chicken stuff instead of on drinkin or gamblin or drugs!

(You know you REALLY have a problem when you justify your addiction by comparing it favorably to a "worse addictions"!)

Another old wive's tale, eh? There should be someone who travels the nation teaching us backyard chicken owners to sex or own chicks properly. Maybe I can steal a worker from the hatcheries. And by steal I mean room and board. http://www.pic4ever.com/images/meatballs.gif ...every 21st day!

The best I've been able to come up with is "wing sexing" of 1-3 day olds. Google it to see video/pic. The next way which I'm sure is more accurate is vent sexing. I have to find someone who can show me this, I can't find video/pic on it so far. If you find something, please let me know. I raise silkies and they don't declare their sex until 7-12 months old. It's a long time to raise them (fall in love with them) and then find out you have all roos. I'm in the city and have a 'stealth' coop. I'm pushing my luck when I have roosters come of age and start crowing. You've heard of the horse whisperer? I'm the chicken shussher !

I just looked up the string technique. It's said to not work, but who knows? These things are always up for debate. It says that you dangle the clip over the chick and if it moves around and around it's a pullet, if it sways it's a cockerel. Is that it, Bargain?
