Still just one chick hatched, and no more pips yet. Hmmmm.

After it spent 24 hours in the incubator all alone, I decided to place it in the brooder with the four TJs chicks and the "BR" which I bet is really an Australorp. The age difference is one week and three weeks. I spent a LOT of time observing everybody's behavior to ensure the hatchling would be safe.

Only a couple of investigative pecks, a couple of times it got bowled over by the others moving around in the brooder, but all was okay. And this morning, it's just another chick in the brooder, albeit a very tiny one. It spends most of its time at the "hot" end, of course, but does make it to the food and water. SO cute watching it watch the others and noodling its way in between them to eat at the same time they all seem to feel the need to eat all at once. The older ones all fall asleep in a group at the cooler end of the brooder, but the week old chick sleeps up on the "binky" (small plush toy pig) with the baby chick, under the heat lamp.

Side note: my two roving bathroom chickens, Yul & Fritzie, who jump to the wire cover over the babies' brooder, no longer frighten the chicks beneath 'em. Because of their lack of panic, the hatchling also doesn't startle at the great big things that get on top of the brooder. It just looks up at whatever is blocking the heat lamp's comforting warmth and glow, then moves to a spot where it can still be warm.

Amazing behavior.

Only 1! Bummer. Have you opened the others up? I had a staggered hatch...got my first Lav Ameraucana chick of the year today! And one more Showgirl with a serious top knot and a CE mix.

This showgirl was on day 23 trying to hatch and needed my help. I snapped a quick picture while she was still wet...check out that top knot!
