Okay, thanks! I'm hoping to do that, given that the SQ Blue Orp breeder responds to my PM's...

If chickens are like children 3 will not work. You will need 4 total. Besides what's one MORE chicken when you already have a couple?

Try telling that to my mom

GammaPoppyLilyFlutter's Mom? What's one more when you already have a couple? And you know yourself that 3 just isn't a good number of anything. You know "three's a crowd, four is 2 groups of 2 and therefore more peaceful"

There. I tried. Hope it helps, cuz I really beleive that 3 is going to be a problem; 2 are going to gang up on one. 4 is the right number. 2 groups of 2 friends each, interacting with each other and keeping each other company.

Very good argument

I'll see if the breeder insists on me getting two. Or if one "accidentally" hides in the car

GammaPoppyLilyFlutter: I really think you will be ok adding just one to your little group. My chickens don't buddy up at all. They each do their own thing and out of all of them I could not pick any that always stay together and not mingle with all the others. Just my opinion. Chickens are kind of like herd animals and not really caring of how many are in their herd, if that makes sense? Even a lead hen will change her mind on the pecking order at the drop of a hat. I truly say just go for it and see how your girls accept a new one and you might be surprised.

I must add myself to this thread!

I have 3 chicks and a duckling and am currently looking at getting into some of the cooler breeds; blue red lace wyandottes, light brahmas, polish, delwares, and possibly a sumatra or 2.

When I asked my landlord ( yes I rent but he is happy to see chickens again, he had 70 himself once ) if I could get a few more he said ok!

I swear I am only getting 5 more ( want an even 8 )!

I just need to remember that I will have to move again, one last time and that the chicks won't always be so small and cute and cuddly. Must have control over chick fever or I might get myself into some real trouble!

Ok. An even 8. You keep telling yourself that. We'll keep enabling you til your coop is FULL.

(I ordered 5, am looking for 2 silkies for broody purposes and just emailed someone who is downsizing and looking for home for some of his hens and my coop isn' t even BUILT YET...chicken math will catch up with you too)
