You can get an incubator for about $44.00 at TSC...you will need to turn the eggs by hand 3 times a day. An autoturner costs just about the same. Also, look on Craigslist and ebay...everyone seems to find deals on those sites.

Cool! Thanks

I'm actually going to Tractor Supply Co.

Yay! Now I'm exited.

Get a hydrometer...it will help you measure humidity. I got one from Walmart that measures humidity and temperature...it was $8 or less.

Aww how cute! I had one little salmon favorelle hen in my last hatch but I had to give her away to rehome her two brothers. I wanted her to stay with my four little d'uccle hens but it was not to be.

Aw, thanks guys! Aw, that's sad featherz, about having to get rid of your hen.

I'll see if I can

Just came home from getting it! Big, Styrofoam, no automatic turner, temp. measurer, etc.

I bought two of the same...with the auto turners. I had great success over the summer...something went downhill this fall. Keep it in a draft free place. We've been hatching in our den for 9 months now. Some people put them in their bedrooms! Ha ha! Keep us posted when you put in your first eggs.

I will be keeping it in the basement but I don't think I'll have any eggs until February. In Feb. we will be buying 15 BO chicks, and POSSABLY buying about 12 fertile eggs to hatch! Excited!!!

My chickens aren't TOO bad when it comes to meeting new ones... I'm so excited, because if everything goes as I've planned, this spring I'll be building a bigger coop and then I'll buy some SF's!!! Yaaaaaaaaay! The coops going to have to be huge, because I'll have 11 chickens if all of them make it...
smile.png
Sorry, I'm just excited!!!

It is great to be excited! Who are you getting your SF's from? I hatched a few out from Melissa Parker in Houston, TX. The birds were gorgeous. Myrtle is one from that hatch.

I really REALLY want to hatch!!!! The first chickens I had were hatched, but one of them ended up being a rooster, and we live in town. Now the DM and the DD are convinced we'll get tons of roosters if we hatch again, but maybe I'll find someone who can take them. If not, I'll just buy sexed chicks. Who would you recommend for buying eggs/chicks from?

Well, everybody has different experiences...I ordered my first SF's from McMurray. Hatchery birds are fine for the backyard...but aren't best for showing...other than 4-H. One of the girls had only 4 toes instead of 5, one rooster had color leakage. My suggestion would be to see if there are fellow BYCers with SF's. I recall there is a thread dedicated to SF's. Let me look and I'll post back here. Look at the BYCers personal pages, websites, and try to find a quality breeder. ALWAYS ask where people got there birds. Most BYCers are here to help one another.

Edited to add...

Here is the thread for Faverolles. Hope this helps.
