Good Morning Everybody!

My husband and I are talking about cooking one of our chickens this weekend. This will be a first for us. I may just become a vegetarian.

I keep my nest boxes cleaner than my bathroom! Fresh pine shavings and they are covered at night and any unfortunate hen that happened to roost in a nest gets evicted! My eggs come out perfectly clean! I washed ALL of the Poo-smeared eggs that came via ebay. I know some say its bad, but I am not incubating turds!

The eggs that I bought from a BYCer were 98% clean when they arrived and so I did not wash them. Quality shows and people who take care of their chicken houses are who I want to buy from.

I had occasion to enter a recently-vacated coop and I took this picture...

Buck Creek Chickens - I am not sure if they were going for nest boxes or shelves or maybe "chicken storage compartments"! All I could think when I saw them was "WHAT A WAST OF GOOD LUMBER"!


GammaPoppyLilyFlutter - I totally agree that eggs should NOT be washed for hatching! However, chickens should NOT have to lay eggs in FILTHY nest boxes! When I look at the trays of eggs being wheeled in and out of hatchers in videos showing professional hatcheries, all the eggs are clean! I think they either keep the nest boxes and thus the eggs clean OR wash the eggs.

I would be VERY interested in hearing from others who have similar experiences? Does anyone have chickens that poo at the same time they lay?

When I sold some eggs on ebay, I only sent clean eggs (not washed eggs, just clean ones). Dirty ones (less than 1 a week) get cracked open and put on the dogs food.

I think nest boxes are fun to build, so I have 1 more nest than I have hens right now! SO every one has a choice of boxes. I still find 2 hens jammed in the same nest sometimes. I gently pick up the one who is sticking further out and place her elsewhere and they usually stay there and lay there!

I have read and reread this post several times, I worry about it sounding argumentative. I hope no one takes it that way.

The 2 jumpy chicks are for the 2 eggs in my bator (out of 62), that went into lockdown yesterday. I REALLY hope they hatch!

Oh yes. Not really at the same time, but they poop beforehand from the roost then they lay an egg (from the roost. Why don't they just take the effort to walk 3 steps to the nesting boxes?). I always wash them, but there are no hatching eggs since I have no rooster (though I want one...)
