Hi my name is Elizabeth and I'm a chookaddict.
I was supposed to have 3. I'm not entirely sure how many I have. Around 30. I'm allowed to have 25 on a 800 sq. metre block where I live. I live on a 799 square metre block. But I asked the council and they said they'd count it at 800 for me!!! ..... they sure as hell are wishing they took that back now! My husband was raised on a 750 acre farm up north so most of our purchases and culls go up there. We're going up there this week to put some ducks in the freezer and bring up new breeding stock.
I wanted 3 because it's just the two of us but now I sell my eggs. $4 a doz is like 1/2 the price of the markets for organic-fed freerange (which mine are, but not certified but neither are the shops sometimes) and I put it in a little Chicken Bank. The chickens food and medicine comes out of this bank. Surprisingly, they have money! But if I bought my chickens out of the chicken bank...... yeah. hahahaha they're not making me money thats for sure.
Really need to consider them for food these days. Getting too excited with hens and wants over needs. I'm sad the five silkies are going up (to the farm.. the real farm, with land) this week. They were cute little stupid heads. Also turns out the two sexed barnvelder hens I bought are not all hens... so now I have a Barnie breeding pair I'll send to the farm to make more Barnies. I could get a refund from the breeder for it being a rooster, but I'm actually fine with this. Helps the cull.
I think my favourites so far are my muscovies, my baby Wynadotte chick and, I know this sounds funny, my Isa Browns. I love how simple, pure and calm they are. My sussex is everyone else's favourite because she's not shy AT ALL (and never was) and will probably own pecking order by the time she lays her first egg, but she's a bit much for me. I love the laziness and happiness of the Isa Browns.
But hot darn my barnies/silkies are cute.
