The anticipation is stressful and fun! I will be candling eggs tonight. This part is easy...it is when they go into lockdown that I bite my nails. I've had too many chicks die at day 18-19.

I'm going to wait and candle Thursday ( day 3 ) ..I doubt I'd see much if I candled tonight.

ok,i think i need to post now.it has been a hard realization but ...
yes i am an addict.
it started 2 yrs ago.went to the feed store and bought the easter chickens.i knew they would be roos but thought we could raise them and give them away.the next day or so went to tractor supply and DH said go ahead, get some red pullets.so we had 11 chickies in the bathroom and no place outside to put them.built a pen with stuff around the farm(it was free).now we have over 120 chickens,4 breeder yards and a huge 300sg ft flight yard.i have converted half of the front horse pasture into a chicken community.seriously,i have lived in worse housing than my coops.
i wanted only blue chickens of every breed and them it became any chicken as long as it wasn't mean(flighty is ok).hatching season is coming and i now have an itch for ducks and turkeys.

Welcome to the thread. The worse thing about this addiction is that it seems only BYC people understand it!

Real world people just don't get it.

if you are getting dead chicks at that stage have you disinfected you 'bator, not just clean, you might have a nasty bug in there that's killing your chicks, I use oxine at least once a month, you can use it even with eggs in there

We've been trying to figure this out...with the last few hatches. We disinfect the bators with clorox and rinse thoroughly. Someone mentioned too little humidity after the first hatch. So we upped the humidity in the second. Same results. These were shipped eggs. I put my own fertile eggs in for a control...they passed too, so I can't blame the shipped eggs. I'll look into your Oxine suggestion. I haven't heard of it...where would one get it?
My current hatch is a test for washed/unwashed eggs. I am only on day 9 so I will see if it has anything to do with me not washing the eggs in a week and a half. Also, I still have a lousy cheapo incubator. I would feel better with a superior one...the Brinsea of my dreams!

I get my oxine from Culter Supply, what kind of 'bator do you have. sometime there is a nook or cranny that gets missed when cleaning, try a search here (BYC) I know there have been posts on Oxine

It's just a little cheapo bator...Little Giant I think (I got 2 at TSC). I'll look into the Oxine. Thanks.
