Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

I admire those who do process chickens for meat, but I cannot do it myself.

I admire vegetarians, but I could not keep weight on when I tried it!

I need an intervention, fellow addicts! I am back-sliding! I now want LESS chickens!

My chickens are VERY well taken care of, but they are SO much work to keep them this happy. I cannot stand dirty coops and I never let them go without food or water, but the time it takes to do all that is depriving me of time with my family and friends! SO I have decided to sell about half of mine so that I can spend less time cleaning coops and feeding and watering and the ones I keep will have more room!

It kinda was the last straw when I got told I smelled like chicken, not in the food kinda way, but in the "like a chicken" way! Also, I got compared to someone on animal hoarders who was living in a trailer with 200 chickens!

I rehomed about 50 chickens this year (in small groups, I didn't have them all at once). As I work full time I try to keep only those I can take care of. When it gets to be a full time job, I have to make those decisions and send them away. So I support you.

Just make sure you still have plenty!!!

Actually it's good that I now work full tiime or I WOULD end up on Hoarders.. LOL. Although without the abuse and tiny cages and gangrene.

You do what you need and want to do! If you feel dwindling your flock down will be beneficial to you...then do it.

Who are we to say no? This entire process needs to be fun (albeit work, but fun work)...otherwise, we wouldn't do it. I think you are smart to acknowledge you are overwhelmed, and proactive to do something about it. I had the chance to take my roos to an auction today. Couldn't bring myself to do it. The auction will take place again in 2 more weeks. I have a dozen or so roos to get rid of.

And to the person who said you smell like chicken and whomever compared you to the mental hoarder person w/ hundreds of indoor chickens....

Muggsmagee The 1st summer I had my BO's I had a whole room full of broody buffs. Last year, only one went broody and hatched 1 baby. A bunch of my bantams went broody and hatch babies but only 1 BO pullet.

I can't wait to show you Peeps some pictures of my new boys!

I am excited!! I wouldn't be terribly dissapointed if she turned out broody later on

She is from breeding stock rather than hatchery (I believe) and I heard they tend to have more of the broodiness in them than hatchery girls.

I have a Brahma as well, but she was a laying machine before she went into molt, so I don't expect her to be broody.

Along with a Wyandotte, Barred Rock, and EE.

How much sleep do ya think I got last night??

NADA lol! I was up all night excited and working in the yard with a floodlight till about 1am (quietly.. hehe) getting the area for my coop prepared.

Chickens = Craziness? I think so.. LOL

Here are some not so great picures of the Orpingtons (and there are some others mixed in there hehe

Ha ha...I'm sending another BYCer some eggs to put under her "air hatching" broody! She says her hen is perpetually broody. Again...no fair.

Whenever somebody wants a broody hen, the nest boxes are, for the most part, chickenless.
