Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

Dear Fellow addicts,

I thought I was doing "better"! I sold some hens (I am down to 3 adult hens now). I sold all of the baby chicks, and I still have some of the started pullets listed on Craigslist. I got it down to 23 total birds!

SO, looking good, right?

WRONG! Ideal poultry emailed me yesterday - Big Sale At Ideal Poultry
Happy New Year from Ideal Poultry. This weeks special includes bantams, ducks, our Surprise Special and three standard breeds. Items will be shipped from our 1-12-11 hatch.

So of course I ordered 25 more of the surprise special! Last week's special was not very exciting - it was 1/2 RIRs and 1/2 Barred rocks, so they were easy to list on Craigslist, thinking I would start early to get them gone sooner! The first email took them all!

I wonder what I will get this week?

I posted a poll about being addicted to ordering chicks and got some interesting responses, you can read about it here - https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=438424

That is fantastic that you sold so many chicks/chickens!

I voted on your poll. I have had 2 chick orders come in the mail. I loved it! However, I want to know exactly what I'm getting vs a surprise package. That's the control freak in me! Let us know what you get in your surprise special box!

I opened a BR egg, out popped a tiny baby, but she was BREATHING! Too tiny, but BREATHING! Wouldn't she die if she stopped growing???? It's day 23. Quick thinking, I got one of the fresh GSL eggs from the coop and put her and her yolk inside then put her under a heat lamp, but I don't know... She still had her yolk attached

If she hasn't absorbed her yolk, and this is day 23...I'm thinking your temps may have been too low, and she developed too slowly.

Crossing my fingers for your chick. Did you check the others?

I love your outlook! I am struggling against the unpredictability of each new day and trying to stay flexible. I'm going to adopt your philosophy and maybe things will be easier. Thank you.

Checked the Leghorns. Miscarriages. All of them. My temperature stayed at a steady 99.5. My chickens died and I hate waiting and I'm never incubating EVER AGAIN!!!

Were these shipped eggs? pullet eggs? how was the humidity? Maybe get another thermometer to double check the temperature?

On a lighter note, just got my OE eggs from Nat - she shipped them yesterday at 4PM and my PO called me at 830 today. Wow! 23 OE and one Lav Orp/EE mix. I'll set them for the 'chinese new year' hatch. Boy, we can come up with any excuse to hatch, eh?
