I am also a chicken addict! I have one bird left from my origional purchase of straight run chicks from McMurray's 8 years ago. Thought she was a hen, but never saw her in a nest. She started getting very small spurs at about a year old. So, we called her our cross dressing hen because she/he never crowed until last year. My neighbors dog ate 6 of my hens from this origional flock last year and she/he (Spike) refused to sleep in the coop for several weeks and finally crowed from my front porch railing. Sounded like a rooster with laryngitis! haha! In the meantime, I had a
tractor supply attack during chick days about 4 years ago and still have my little banty roo (Scooter) who is friendly, docile, but won't let us touch him. He free ranges as he wishes, as he is a good flyer. And is a wonderful watch rooster. Crows whenever anyone pulls in the drive. 2 years ago, I got a few easter egger hens from the local feed store. So I only have 2 laying hens now. I just got my Meyer catalog in the mail yesterday and have been combing through all day and plan to share a new batch of chicks with my brother in law. Since getting this catalog, I have been addicted to reading this site and seeing everybody's new chicks. I also have been to
tractor supply in the past week and did pass up on the straight run chicks. I was very proud of myself for my abstinence. I really need to wait until the weather starts getting better here in Ohio so that my timing works out for my new flock intro. Hard to wait after seeing everybody's new babies, though. Maybe another trip to
tractor supply is in order next week as pullets are supposed to come in....hmmm...
