Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

I have babies!!! 6 so far, but more are pipped. I restrained myself and only had 14 eggs in lockdown, 12 naked necks and 2 mutts. They are popping out right on time!!

Also, two of my 12 week old cockerels crowed today for the first time.. It was so cute, they sounded like kazoos!!

I have too many so put them on CL. One is really pretty so maybe someone will want him.

I think it's time to take away the babies from broody mamas - they are leaving them alone and running around after me now while the babies look lost.

(they are 4 and 5 weeks old, iirc).. They are OK, and mama gets back in time for bedtime.

I'm going to do a massive flock reduction right before fall, just haven't decided who stays and who goes.. sigh.

Ooo, pictures of the EE/Orpington mix would be nice. I agree an Orpington is needed, I like mine.

Also a forecast of no rain for at least five days...

. I'm not sure what to do with myself. I know what my wife will be doing after work, Gardening. I was put in the dog house for culling so many chickens without telling her, lol. She wasn't interested in them much until this last order, when I mistakenly let her choose what to order and then of course she wants to be a part of their lives.

:barnie Yes, she checks on them nightly and is asking me all sorts of questions about every possible thing we can do to make the chicks happier.

I *think* this one is brahma/cochin:

This one.. not sure, might be SLW/Cochin. I'd say australorp, but she was broody at the time I picked up this egg and my SLW was my only other black chicken that lays brown eggs..

Hello fellow addicts!

Seems like I got busy as soon as the weather got nicer, one of the evils of "free" irrigation water! The pumps and filters are constantly clogging and really just seems like a miss-use of water, but that is another subject altogether.

I have had a terrible relapse on my chicken addiction in the last week.

Yesterday I brought home 3 bantam pullets (a ratty cochin, a dcute Anver and a fastBBR OEGB)

Today I brought home 3 BIG EE hens and 2 balding sex-links.

Last week I bought a white Wyandotte and a gold laced wyandotte.

THis Friday I have the EXTREME privilege of adopting some of Daisychicks Ameraucanas - 3 Wheatens and a LAVENDER!

I waited to get the Ameraucanas until I got rid of the chicken-damaging goose (he left tonight) and I have the SECURE fence (set in cement) in place, it has been a rough summer for chickens - more than 25 got taken by a fox or foxes unknown!

.... and THAT'S why I hoard! Kidding, kind of....

Hey stranger! Congrats on the Ameraucanas...they are still my faves! Sorry about your losses...I'm dwindling my flock down considerably...no predator issues, I just have no time to spare!

What's the story behind the chicken-damaging goose? Just mean and picked on the chickens?

My geese are so awesome...I'm waiting for the day they become mean...is it inevitable?

Thanks Muggs, I think the Lavender is from your eggs, maybe the Wheatens too!

This will give me total of 13 Hens - 6 EEs and 7 Ameraucanas (2 Black/ Lav splits, 1 white, 1 Lav, and 3 wheatens)!

All of these under a Silver Ameraucana rooster and a Araucana/ EE mix rooster should make some VERY interesting EEs!

I had 2 rumpless EE roosters when I was a kid and I loved the look of them!

BIG - like an EE, but rumpless like the Araucana!

After trying about 25 different breeds of chickens, THIS is what I have settled on!?!?!?!?!? *hide

I don't know, I ordered 2 tufted Romans back in February. Hand raised, follow us all over, then started grabbing chickens by the neck. None were injured, until a couple escapee chickens thought it would be cute to go sleep over in the gooses nighttime lockup area and we didn't see them!

Two dead, one of which had her toenails chewed off! A third bird, 'Barny', the Partridge rock had her back completely plucked by the geese, but played dead and so, survived.

After that I wasn't in the mood to have geese no more...
