Chicken Predator CSI - with crime scene PHOTOS.

I've had great luck with cat food, not so much with the rest. Tonight though I'm trying some of the other things.
let me clearify. Let it out of ur "live trap" and then shoot it with shot gun on the run. WIth bird shot, i hardly even see blood come out of them. U dont even see holes in them they are just, well dead.
as for conibear defintly put it where nothing else will get into it! as the feller said. Neighbors cat. You dont want that. Not a pretty sight.

Baits ive used that work great.
Chicken (obviously they tatse good)
Peanut butter
Berries (strawberries/blackberries/blueberries)
Sardines
Corn

I havent had much luck with the marshmellow, i dont know why they dont seem to want it. All my trappin buddies swear by it.

I don't own a .22 or a shot gun. I have a S&W 9mm and a Ruger 454... which would you suggest using and where for the best "kill shot"? I need to find out if it is legal to shoot them in my county but I will find that out today. Thanks

Either one will do good job on a coon. But i would try the 9mm. Right between the eyes maybe up about an inch.

GOT HIM!!!
First 2 nights, the marshmallows were taken and the trap was tripped. One more chick was killed, it was once again yanked out bit by bit. The racoon(s) had wiped out my entire flock of 5 chicks. All the older ones were untouched because they sleep on the roost.

The duckling is part of the baby flock, she's the only survivor, she now has to follow the older flock around, but they bully her.

Congratulatory sex

Those soulful eyes did not work on me because my heart is hardened. A friend dispatched it using a cross-bow shortly after. He will probably be called upon a few times more.

Being on a steep slope, there are security flows in my coop design. The wire coop bottom was great for cleaning poop, but it also allowed the coon the pull on the chicks. My imminent project is to block the opening under the coop.

This is the coon poop under the trap. I had seen these in my yard before, but always mistaken them as deer poop because of the berries. Now I know.

Congrats! Keep up the good work. Keep trapping; where there's one, there are more.....although today there is one less

Were the poor little chick killed both on the inside and outside of the pen? if so I would think your culprit is a Skunk or a Weasel....can you find any hair tangled on the knotting of the fence? Really get down and take a look.....you can also sprinkle flour around your pen and see what kind of footprints are left behind...maybe someone will lend you a wildlife cam. I sure hope you catch them and when you do....maybe you have a neighbor who can dispatch them for you...don't stop setting it if you catch something the first time...there may be more then one.

As everyone else has stated....very, very sorry for your loss...so sad to loose what takes so long to finally get and then to be lost all at once in one bad night. it is very sad.

oppps my bad....didn't see so many pages.....looks like you are turning into a fine trapper....keep up the good work.

We had problems years ago with raccoons as well.
I agree with earlier posts:
1. Don't release it.
2. Kill it.
3. This was a female with litter, so you will have to kill more than one.
Do what you gotta do.
I solved my 'coon problem by legally trapping my local area for 3 years. Harvested more than 30 coons, some in the upper 30 pound range. Since then, development in the area had probably given them more menu options - trashcans, cat food left outside, etc.
Good luck with it.
Oh, You can fill a 30 gallon trashcan and dump the critter in the cage in that, but you gotta have the stomach for it.
Go get 'em.
