Poor little babies... I will keep an eye out for them in my area and rescue.

Is this more of a city thing though? I live in the middle of nowhere and haven't seen signs of this craziness. --Thank God!

I was gonna ask ya why you would give them another next year to play with then bring back - that seemed odd in that ad (to me, anyway). They didn't word it quite like that, but the gist of it was - they would take the unwanted (poorly planned purchase) then next year give them another (unwanted in the long term) chick and take it back once they had mishandled through ignorance and abused it a little bit. Seemed like the ad was enabling folks to be irresponsible, to me. (based on your other posts I've read, I didn't think it as really you

but I had to ask.)

I agree that exploiting any animal is terrible. I didn't sell to anyone this week who wanted Easter presents for their children. No one even called and if they did, I probably wouldn't sell to them. You are right that they end up either dead or abandoned.

However, I do have a different perspective. I ordered hatchery sexed pullet chicks as a service to some customers because I sold out of my layers and chicks so early on. All my customers were folks who couldn't have roos, or only wanted a few to start or didn't order early enough from the hatcheries. I paid more than $4 each before adding the shipping for a few of the breeds. I don't think charging $7 or $8 for these is out of line......Plenty of folks sell straight runs for $3 and $4. So getting a sexed pullet for that price wouldn't be bad. My customers were also able to get a great selection and had choices.

I didn't sell any of mine for more than $5 dollars. I lost money on the cochins. I also pretty much sold out in 3 days. It took time to drive and pick them up at the PO (one hours time, 30 miles of gas), hours to dip, dunk and clean pasty butts, provide feed, heat lamp, etc. If I make $100 bucks on the 100 chicks I'll be surprised, but I'll get to keep a few for my laying flock too. I spent alot more time emailing, providing customer service, and tending to the chicks than I'll get back. Just a different view from someone who sold chicks for the first time NOT for $2 each.

I saw a CL ad for "Rent a Chick"--for $5 this woman was willing to release her chicks to people, and refund them $2 when they were returned. Can only imagine the conditions in which they are kept, the trauma the poor little things go through, the number of unreturned chicks (and the sad fates they meet)...how cruel...I thought it was clever when I first saw it, but then I became a chicken addict, and now it's a whole different perspective...and the poor bunnies, I don't even want to think of it!
