chicken prices gggrrrrrrrr

I started a post on my local craigslist for (Unwanted easter chicks). That I would take all unwanted easter chicks. So far I have only had people e-mailing me to SALE me EASTER chicks. I told them I WAS NOT buying easter chicks I was rescuing easter chicks that people toss after easter is over and the cuteness wears off.

I have seen ALL over my local craigslist for Chicks and Bunnies for easter. It's very sad..

its sad to see people just throw them away practically after the ohhs and awws wear off

Now I know that breeders are usually higher priced for good quality chicks, BUT there is a breeder (small hatchery maybe with the variety they offer) that is selling Black Jersey Giants/Brahmas/Cochins/Polish/Faverolles/Narans for $15/chick and Easter Eggers for $10/chick! The EE one really gets me! While I LOVE EEs, it is not a recognized breed and does warrant that hefty a price!

Needless to say, I don't care how close they are...I don't buy from them.

I am bugged by the buying of chicks and bunnies for easter only and then dumping them! (just like buying dogs for xmas and dumping them too!). Poor animals! People like that need to stick with dyed eggs and chocolate.

Last weekend a friend was visiting me & had brought her 9 or 10-year old daughter. The DD was telling me about the dyed chicks you can buy in Mexico (her dad is from there) and how the coloring makes them more likely to die. I told her that it wasn't that they were dying because they were colored, but because people were buying them & weren't prepared to take care of them. I pointed at my brooder, where I've got 2 babies right now, and said that babies need special food, water, and heat in order to survive.

She shrugged and said, "well, if they die in Mexico, we could just get another one the next week at the market."

Someone obviously missed my point.

There are a couple on my craigslist selling... Laying hens they got from a big hatchery for $5 each, and chickies for $3.. Great deal, but yes, the fluff will be gone and people will be in the pet section offering free to good home...

yep. and during this time of year the hatchery jacks up the price on baby ducks! by at least a $1 !!!! i seen someone on lsn (local shopping network) selling colored rabbits for $20!! i could go to the flea market and by my own rabbit like that for 3 to 5 $$ and color it my self. but it all depends if you really want it or not.

Depending on breeds and lineage some chicks will be more expensive. I sell on occasions started seramas, depending on their type and quality i have never sold one for more than $25. I put lots of time, money and care into these cuties so i feel they are worth every penny, i have seen pq seramas go for far more than i sell mine for. I agree people shouldn't have easter chicks unless they are prepared to take care of them. It is so sad to think alot of them wont make it thru a day because the kids handle them too rough and they dont have a heat source or the right food.
