Hey folks, pretty sure I know how this will turn out but let me get some opinions. In the last week 1 hen has been lethargic, not eating much unless its a favorite food. Still jumps up onto perch to roost at night. Had a messy bottom for several days but honestly I haven't been home to clean it until today. Yesterday, everything on her bottom started turning green. Today, I went to clean her up and inspect her after she got done with some cottage cheese treat. She puked green bile on the side of the shed. Then while I was triming her feathers around her vent and washing her off.... she puked some more. It smelled terrible, like a porta john thats been heavily used in the heat and never cleaned. Also.... some of what she puked up were little bits of green plastic. Vent area is not red, no wounds, her comb is looking pretty dry.

My guess is she ingested plastic from somewhere that did a number on her digestive track, now she has an infection, and is beyond saving. Thoughts?

Do you see plastic in the poop?

I'd give her a good soaking in a little soapy water, see if you can work all the poop off her.
Inspect the tissue all the way around the vent and under to make sure there are not wound and she doesn't have FlyStrike. Do you see any maggots?

If the plastic pieces are very small, she may be able to expel them, it's hard to know. Do provide grit (crushed granite) free choice for your flock.

Hopefully after giving her a good cleanup and clearing the vent, she will poop and you can get some photos of that.

With the crop contents having a bad odor, you may want to treat for Sour Crop. Since you feel she's eaten some plastic, it would probably be a good idea to start with a Flush to see if the digestive system will get to moving. The flush can also help with Sour Crop.

Below is the instructions for an Epsom Salts flush. Do work on hydration in between flushes.

It could possibly be a yeast infection. If that's the case, mix one teaspoon Epsom Salts into one cup of water. Use a syringe without a needle and draw up 8ml of the mixture and give it to her orally 1/4ml at a time, 3 times a day for 3 days.

When you do this, cradle her in your forearm. With your free hand, grab the preloaded syringe. Then with your cradling hand/arm, use your thumb and finger to gently pull down on her wattles and her mouth will open. Then dose her orally with the 1/4ml Epsom Salt mixture and quickly release her wattles so she can swallow the liquid on her own.
If you dont quickly release her wattles, she could aspirate.
Practice this procedure a couple of times without actually dosing her until you get the hang of it.

Lets us know if the lesions have shrunk or disappeared after 3 days treatment. If not, we'll go another route.

That is a lot of great advice and I will keep this bookmarked should I need to refer to it again. Unfortunately, we are leaving town on vacation thats been planned for 6 months. I'm not sure what Ill do yet, but the elderly relatives that will be feeding the flock won't be able to handle any of that. I am going to try to get the granite before I go, at least thats something. I did rule out flystrike. Thank You for your advice.
