Hello!

I’m pretty new to chickens. My general policy in life is to rescue your animals wherever possible. Trouble is, I’m in Oklahoma, and that seems kind of difficult here.

My first thought, naturally, is battery hens, but I’m pretty sure most of the places around here are under contracts to use their spent hens for meat to go in things such as dog food. (Sorry if I’m not making sense, I’m really tired.) Anyway, I called a couple places just to be sure, and they indeed do not sell their spent hens. There also does not seem to be a currently in function chicken rescue in Oklahoma.

I would absolutely love to just grab chickens as they pop up on Petfinder, but I do have one girl I had to separate from the roosters and I don’t want her to be lonely, and they only pop up on petfinder every now and then.

For the sake of my chicken not being lonely i can forgo the rescue rule in this case and get her some friends, but I wanted to ask you guys first if you knew of any place in OK to rescue chickens, or places that will sell me their battery hens.

thanks guys!

You might try putting an add on craigslist stating "iso spent hens".
I would caution you to keep in mind that bringing in chickens from other flocks can also bring in disease and parasites. For the sake of your hen, you might get a few newly hatched pullets to keep her company. They grow fast.

First, kudos to you for wanting to help the unwanted. You have a good heart.

I don't know anything about chicken rescue in your state but here in Iowa, multiple canine rescue groups bring up dogs from Oklahoma. In fact, my newest rescue dog is an Okie.

Also, it's great that you want to find a friend for your girl, and I wish you the best.

Welcome to BYC, where countless folks care about chickens!
