Well this went down hill quick
I don't enjoy this site because of this kind of discussions.
I think it's time to pack up and move out

Its something special.. A site to behold. Like watching a train crash into a blimp.

Oyster shell will only dissolve in acidic conditions. Otherwise, oysters would not have shells.

The chicken gut is only weakly acidic. It is typically greater than pH 6.0.. In still water, shell would take a long time to dissolve at that pH.

But, dissolution is accelerated by first grinding the shell in the gizzard. Small particles dissolve faster than big chunks. I guess that pieces of shell grinding against other pieces of shell would speed things along.

Granite is also dissolved by acids, but much more slowly than shell.

So pebbles and such will eventually dissolve inside a chicken? That's an interesting thing to consider.

@Pickensandchigs I understand that you're trying to get your point across, but you should really mind what you are posting and have a look at the BYC rules. People on this thread are trying to be helpful, but it's hard to be helpful when you are not being helpful yourself. This thread is an interesting discussion, but it will be closed if you don't mind what you're saying.
Thank you

I truly do not understand. I was discussing whether or not oyster shells aid in digestion. I never asked anyone what I should provide for my chickens for digestion.. merely attempting to discuss the finer points of chicken raising, in ramblings section even.

Yes. And I do find this thread interesting. But if you don't watch what kind of things you're posting, an interesting thread will have to be closed

It's not good advice to basically say chicken wire will provide protection to chickens from predators. Animals easily chew and rip through chicken wire so just because you personally have not had that problem does not mean nobody will have that problem. Pretty much any animal with will can destroy chicken wire.

Please folks do not rely on that information

Which animal? I can't pull it apart. Can you? maybe people need to build a sturdy frame.
