Life is easier when you learn to work with nature. It's nature's way to shed leaves and it's in the chicken's nature to scratch through all that good stuff. Win-Win.
I collected about 15 collection bags full of grass/leaves today with the mower. I had some grass that was too long and it needed to be mowed. My dad told me years ago that it was best to keep the grass cut in the fall so that the leaves don't mat up and kill off the grass in the spring. So I dumped all those bags of grass and leaves in the chicken run and, once leveled, there will be about a 6 inch layer just from today. I'm sure the chickens will continue to scratch through all that stuff and break it down really good. Should be some good compost for the garden next spring.
