Agree that dirt, wood chips, leaves, and straw are all good. Anything I add I do so in a very thin layer (ex: toss a half bag of leaves into my 6x16 run). Honestly though... Mine seem to prefer dirt. They love hunting for bits of grit, bugs, etc, and dust bathing in it and seem to get fed up if they have to scratch through too much stuff to reach bare earth.
I must give a shout out to pelletized pine horse bedding though! If you ever get really bad puddles or muddy spots that you'd like to sop up, those pellets are fantastic! No need to put them everywhere, just toss some in as needed. Pretty cheap at Tractor Supply.
