How high does a fence need to be keep birds from flying over?
My mother (who lives next door) does not want birds in her yard. She complains about the birds getting into her flower beds and the poo she always manages to step in, shes 83 years old and doesn't see the poo until its to late.

It just depends on the bird. You could clip their wings or, alternatively, put a wire on top of the pen. The latter would not only keep your birds from flying out, but also protect them from predators.

Here I started with the original 5ft chainlink fence and clipped wings on my birds....that didn't work so well.

Next I extended the fence up another 4 feet with poles and chickenwire...clipped more wings...

That didn't work either. Next door neighbor shot one of my pullets in his yard

Now the run is covered with flexable netting over arched PVC poles. Now everybody is happy

but I've lost one of my spangled russian orloff pullets

. Don't waste time doing what I did, cover the run from the beginning.

I have a 6ft tall dog kennel run (it's 10x20) and my marans and EE's can't even start to get over it.

Our ducks behave themselves and stay behind a three foot fence, but the chickens love to go over the fence and get in the neighbor's yard so I've stopped letting them out of the coop to forage.

I have mostly Silver Laced Wyandottes. They free range, and I just want to keep them away form my mother. They seem to have a preferance for her flower beds.
I know 6' won't stop them. How about 8' or 10"?

Our flock is in a 4' high chain link enclosure, 20 x 20. We had a few escapees when we brought our first two sets of hens home, two had misadventures with our GSP, and no one flies out now. Perhaps they are contented with the size of their space, the treats they enjoy, and the general scratch/cluck of their days. We also have clipped wing feathers on one side of each hen. Until these grow back, this seems to be a deterent. They flop and leap around sometimes, after bugs and such, but they stay in and then enjoy their couple of hours of free range each evening. ~G

Those wyandotte fly real well you have to cover it period. End of story. Mine fly straight up into the walnut tree with no effort

Yep, my run is 10' and not only do the wyandotte's fly out whenever they want they like to hang out up there during the day--I think to get away from the roos, I have way to many and we've been too busy to send them to camp freezer. My rir's, bo, br's and ba's all stay put, but those darned wyandotte's and one of my ee's are always going over the fence.
