Chicken Saddle DRAMA!!!

It only took overnight for mine to adjust. For about an hour, the whole flock was terrified of this black hen with a purple cape, even the rooster! In fact, when the hen glanced over her shoulder, she jumped straight up I'm the air as well. Things calmed down, although she picked at the elastic that evening. No one notices it now, and I'm happy to have her bare back protected.

I have a second hen that looks like she could use one. I plan to put that one on later in the evening. It seems like there is some kind of chicken drama here everyday! :D

I dressed my girls at night so when the sun came up they woke up wearing the aprons. Avoid bright colors and put an apron on the rooster.

Big Sister loves her dress.

No, Stan didn't need one. He doesn't care what his gals are wearing. He did get alarmed when I put a bracelet (weaved from bread ties) on his leg.

I put my first saddleon my girls last year. I did it at night so no one really noticed it in the morning. Guess they just didnt really care.

oh wait, i guess it's ok. If 'Bird can wear one, so can Stan. Just so he doesnt think he's Superman like 'Bird.

I made some for my hens out of old jeans and didn't sew anything. I just used the leg bottoms of some of my kid's outgrown jeans. One pair had some stretch to them which worked even better. I just cut them out... kind of trial and error. I roughly measured the space between their wings for the "arm holes" and the length down the back. The piture above is my hen that was attacked by the neighbor's dog and I had to cover her back to keep her from being pecked by the others until she healed and the feathers came back (You can see the BluCote stains on her feathers). I've made several hen aprons from old jeans and they work great. I have a BO that is quite a little hussy and she definitely has to wear one!

But seriously, they are very sturdy and cheap. This isn't rocket science. If you have an apron, just use it as a pattern to make another.

Oh, by the way. If you have someone to help hold the hen, you can actually trim the apron to size while she is wearing it. Custom fit!

I made a blue saddle for my red lady. She freaked out just having it on her. The rooster chased her some. She went in the coop and cried. She was so stressed i took it off of her. She was missing her feathers when I got her. Rooster is young and has no spurs yet. She has no open wounds but i worry about her getting some. Idk what to do.
