Chicken safe fire ant control?

I use Orthene when I can find the mound. Takes about a tablespoon per mound. I sprinkle it on the mound then just lightly disturb it so a few ants come out. They then take into the mound and it dies. Takes about 24 hours. Instructions say water it in but I seldom do that.

If you're able to find the mound and pour boiling water on it, this works to knock them back for a time.

I only use Amdro on mounds where I can guarantee that my hens will not find the treated mounds. Why poison your hens if you don't have to?

Lately, I've just been using the same permethrin fly spray I use on my horse. Ants are usually making their trail to some food source so I set the nozzle on 'stream' and "paint" my way along the trail and into any underground holes. Fire ants are a constant problem during the summer months around here.
