Chicken Scooting Backwards!

I have had birds like this lately with sudden onset paralysis, but they were much younger. Not all of them made it, but the last three are recovering wonderfully. I started them on a homeopathic and herbal treatment and it seems to have REALLY helped. I used Hypericum 30c disolved in 4 oz distilled water, combined with 500mg cranberry powder. I use the shaken in a water bottle method, not stirred

I saw it on her as a treatment for Marek's and wanted to kick myself. I have used hypericum on humans for years. It is great for all sorts of pinched fingers, sciatica etc. The best part, it is literally quantum particles that help healing. It is not something you could over dose her on.

My birds that I have treated have gone from laying on their sides, unable to stand two days ago, to walking around like drunken saliors yesterday, to almost perfectly normal today. The Cranberry powder has great antioxidant properties, especially for neuro stuff. I just put it in a little bowl and let them drink it when they wanted to. Kinda had to swaddle them so they were up right and could drink. I refilled as needed.

Side effects they drank like crazy for a little bit, and I know I had been giving them water! The one who drank the most start also going potty the most

They very shortly started eating a good bit, and last night my little Lav Orphington who I just knew was gonna die started jumping out of the box she was in to come to me. It was so cute. She is feeling so much better and so is the Barred Rock. I'm not for sure of what the issue is, but I know these things can help a variety of issues.

http://www.cranberryinstitute.org/about_cranberry.htm Check out all the health research... I know neither of these are specifically about chickens but it might help you see if it is right for your birds and something you want to try. I'm very thankful I tried it with mine.

Good luck I hope you keep us up to date.

~Christal~ Thank you so much for this info....it sound exactly like what is happening to my "Dora." She was just fine and now all of a sudden this weird lameness --and I too have to hold her up for support so she can eat and drink! She has an okay appetite but isn't too interested in water.
Now, where can I purchase this hyericum? Grocery store I hope??? I will get some tomorrow! And the cranberry powder - -at the grocery store in the vit section?
Thanks again!

No you will need to go to a health food or natural medicine store. I would call them, make sure you specify the homeopath hypericum perforatum do not let them try to tell you that this herbal supplement is the same. It isn't you can hurt things a lot more with toxicity with herbal extracts especially. They are these little round white sugar looking pellets.

Here is a link to what you need at amazon.com It will help you be sure your getting the right stuff. There are several compainies that make it but I always get borion's or hylands. That has been with my human children too!

That is just one type of the cranberry stuff. You just want to make sure it is 100% cranberry not cranberry flavoring, cranberry like, and not with any funny stuff added in. But that really isn't hard to find, I think even Walmart carries some in their equate line. I normally just go to the health food store and get it. All at once along with my homeopaths, and vitamins. Some health food stores even carries the cranberry powder in bulk for people who make their own home remedies. If that would interest you it is possible, but if you just starting out for easy of use I would jet the 500 mg of Cranberry powder.

I also increase my birds protein levels when they are sick. Often I just put them on chick starter, broiler starter, it does have higher protein, and lets admit all natural is great but if their immune system is compromised sometimes a dose of antibiotics can go a long way especially when you don't know what is going on. Most meat bird start, and chick starter for that fact has antibiotics mixed into it. I also put some chopped up crasins and pecans in their food yesterday and they snarfed it down. It doesn't hurt to give them a few extra fruits and veggies. We want to make sure they have all the nutritional vitamins, trace, and minerals they need for their body to repair. Brazil nuts are the most preferred, then walnuts, pecans etc.. Their body is going to need the protein to rebuild and the fat to help it all here is a little information on it.

Now begs the question all this research is based on humans, chickens are not humans I know. But cell structure is cell structure there are two basic types plant, and animal. Animal cells all have the phospholipids that act as the cell membrane, also the fat provides myelin a fatty covering over nerve cells.

Because you think this might be a nutritional or nerve issue I see no reason to not proceed with a full frontal assault to get your chicken back! She will love some yummy fruit flavored water, strawberry tops (my kids eat the strawberries and give them the tops) some nuts and fish.. OH my she will never want to leave you.

Hi Christal...

I just wanted to tell you that it took me two days to find everything but I finally got it all! I have started Dora on the cranberry powder and the Hypericum (all I found are the drops). For some reason she isn't much interested in water but I think she was having crop problems too. Her crop has seemed to clear out so tomorrow I am going to make her some egg yolk with some probiotic yogurt, the hypericum and cranberry powder. I so hope this works. She is still clucking at me and alert...I feel for my poor Dora.
To be honest, I am scared it might be Marek's. She is doing that road runner stance...one leg forward and one leg backward a bit. I don't know if it's just simply because she cannot stand and get her balance or what? But I will keep you posted....thank you for your support....I needed it so!
