Chicken skin with rash and scabs discovered after plucking.

Those sores look like each is affecting a feather follicle. Can you tell us where you're located, what feed you started them on, how old they are, what adult feed you transitioned them to, and when?

Also, try opening one to see if some sort of parasite may have made a home in the follicles.
Wow - what would I be looking for? Like a worm of some sort? Should I potentially post in the meat-bird forum to see if anyone else has seen this after plucking?

I just checked some of the living hens - they seem to have a few of these scabs too (not too many and hard to find with their feathers on and them flapping!!). Does anyone know if I should take one to a vet? I can look for a poultry vet in the Lawrence Kansas area.

You may want to look up your state lab, give them a call, try to talk to an actual person that deals with Poultry.
They may want you to send a bird or they may be able to consult via email and photos.

Still hard to tell if those are lesions or as @Coops Dad mentioned, something going on with the feather follicles. Looking at the photos again, it sure does look like where feathers should be. But I still have no idea why they look like that, nor have I ever seen anything like that really.
It would be interesting to find out more though, so if you do get some professional testing or a consult, can you let us know what you find out?
