chicken starting to poop and vent coming out

today as i was looking inside their coop, i saw something weird dangling from the same hens vent. its poo, im sure, but it was like dangling from her vent and she kept trying to push it out but it wasnt coming out fully. she had her vent like exposed and pushing it out. THEN she started pushing and some kind of red internal thing started coming out i dont know what it was but it was like her insides but then it went back in.

She has had a temporary prolapsed vent, which can happen if a hen is constipated or passing an egg. As long as it goes back inside there is no problem unless another chicken is attracted to the red color and pecks it.

thanks for the quick response! if it has happened once, does it mean that it permanently gets loose or something and will come out more often?

one more thing, i was reading other posts about prolapsed vents just now, and one of them said they were tipped off by a bloody egg. There has been eggs like maybe twice in three days which have one or two smears/ droplets of blood on the shell. i thought it was because my two older hens are laying MUCH larger eggs than before. is that fine?
what is a prolapsed vent, is it like a muscle ?

It can be common to see some blood smear on an egg in a new layer, or if they lay a bigger egg. A prolapse is where the inside of the cloaca comes out. That is where the egg tube or vagina comes out of the vent, and the large intestine joins. A prolapsed vent usually occurs when a hen strains to lay and egg, or gets constipated. A calcium deficiency might be a problem if the hen is straining to lay an egg.
