chicken stock in north/central California anyone?

Anybody going to the Hollister show Jan 5th and 6th? I'll be there!
Bringing Seramas, Bantam Leghorn, Crevecoeur, and Possibly a Belgium Bearded D'uccle Mille Fluer.
My little bro will be entering a blue cochin and a buff brahma.
Ever think of the CA mid state fair? 'Tis where I live, and although it's all youth, we have an awesome turnout every year.

We live smack dab in the middle of old town Marysville, Norcal. and have 4 beautiful ladies in our back yard. We had three, but one recently joined our tribe. I thought everyone thought I was crazy, but I am so glad to see I am NOT ALONE.

I am interested in going to the Stockton show. I was talking to wooden_pony (AKA Lisa) and she said she was thinking about going. We live right down the street from one another so she and I could carpool. What day was everyone thinking about meeting? I would prefer Sunday over Sat. as Sat. I have horses I have to trim. Although if I had to change my schedule I suppose I could.

This is my last Sat off until spring break, and I'll miss the Stockton and Fresno shows, and I really want to go to a show. I have never been.
Any tips?

Hello,

I just joined the BYC today. I've been a reader for a while and it seems like everyone has a lot of fun sharing the good the bad and the sometimes ugly and sad stories of our finely feathered friends. We live in the Sierra Mountains of Central California (below Yosemite). I'm the chickenhead of the family. It's only my Husband and myself, our three kids are grown and out of the house.

I told DH what I wanted for Valentines day and it was to go to the 2008 GREATER CALIFORNIA SHOW at the Fresno Fairgrounds. He said it's a date. I'm so excited, I've never been to a show, can anyone give me any pointers as of the Do's and the Don'ts. I'm looking to buy Large Standard Splash Cochin hens. Does anyone know what the cost of hens go for at these shows and what is the likely hood of me finding them there?

OK I think that's enough for now, Hope to hear from you soon!

Hi Mary Ann,

Welcome to the group! I am in Coarsegold--probably the closest BYCer to you. If you want to buy some cochins, especially a particular color, it would probably be best if you arranged a sale before the show. You just never know what will be available in the sale barn.

Several of us from California also belong to CA Chickens, a Yahoo group. You could join there and post what you are looking for and that you will be at the show. If anyone on that board has what you are interested in, they will reply and you can set up a sale.

Often breeders will sell their pet quality birds, which are almost always better than hatchery birds. Prices will vary, but the usual range is 15.00 on up to 25.00. Some will be a little lower, depending on how bad the owner wants to sell, or higher for a really nice breeder/show quality. The latter would be over 25.00 most likely. Juveniles are less.

Here's the link for CA Chickens--it's the best way to ensure you don't go home empty-handed!
