Yesterday one of my chicks (2 mths) did the exact same thing. I was unable to pull it out without causing pain/distress with her. Since I felt it may be stuck on something further down (I could not see any parts of the string in her mouth) I did cut the string as close to her mouth as I could get. I figured it would be worse to have the string dragging and possibly catch on something. I ran her straight to the vet. They have me something called "Laxatone". This is usually used for cats that cannot spit up hairballs. It is a dark gel like substance that she loves. I put some on my finger and she ate it quickly. You can give her this once a day for several days - an amount that is about the size of your pinky tip, for 2-3 days. I kept her in overnight to watch her, in fact. I went in to check on her and found she had removed the screen I put on top of the temporary bin she was in. I eventually found her sitting on the windowsill near the open window! She seems to be doing better this am even though I haven't seen her pass anything yet. The vet said you could even purchase regular cat hairball formula anywhere else that carries it - my chickens are also my pets - so, I chose to go to the vet and buy their brand ($10.95). I'm going to put her out today. Her voice seems a little hoarse, but all I can do right now is give her the medicine and pray. Hope this helps. Sheri Kelly
