Lots of pretty hens seek handsome man, 1-2 years old, must be NPIP:
I am looking for a mature rooster to go in with our little laying flock (Wyandottes, Ameraucanas, and a bunch of mixes, total of eight or ten hens) for the winter. Their man for the last two and a half years has been a Jersey Giant, but he's doing the older-rooster thing and getting very choosy about which hens he wants to breed with. He's also a bit big for some of the girls (he's about 15 lb now). We'd like to retire him to raise the babies, which he loves, and replace him with a kind, mature rooster who knows how to take care of hens and watch out for danger, and will keep the eggs fertile.
The laying flock has a big shed barn and a 100 x 100 pen. We do not free range, but with that size of pen we do have some hawk danger, which is why I'd like a savvy adult rooster and not one of my growing youngsters in there. I mix my own food and the chickens are treated beautifully. He'd be the only rooster in the pen, no competition. This would be a no-kill home as long as he treated the hens well and did his job.
My top choice would be a Black Copper Marans from good lines, but I'd consider any big healthy purebred. Please no mites or other issues. MUST BE NPIP (I know I said that earlier, but it's super important because we're an NPIP flock).
I am in seacoast NH, so could come to you if you were relatively local or could meet you at the Brentwood or Derry swap. PM me if you might have a boy for us. Thanks so much!
