Chicken toe nails...? Cut or not?

Thats a good question I wonder how to tell how far to go when your trimming them. Do you have to trim them for showing?

To prevent cutting too far, can you use a mild dremmel to file them down a bit? We have one for our dogs and was wondering if it would work on the chicks.

Also, is there an age you should start doing this? Mine are 3 weeks old and starting to get clingy to me (the climb all over me). Their nails are scratching me up a bit.
