How often should i move a 96 sq foot tractor/run with 8 chickens? They are about 7 weeks old.

I dont want to let them destroy the lawn completely and I'm trying to let them eat as many bugs as possible.

I have been moving my extremely heavy chicken tractor every 2-3 days weather depending (it's a real project if the ground is wet).

John Suscovich writes about this in his book on meat chicken tractors. His are 6*12 and hold 36 chickens. I think he moves them every three days.

I let the conditions determine that. If the poop starts to build up it is time to move it. If it turns into a muddy mess, move it. My grass came back fairly fast but with all of the extra fertilizer if was a dark green spot. You could tell where it had been for a while. I had to move mine more often when it rained that when the weather stayed dry.

You'll find what works for you.

So just for people searching this topic in the future.

I've found that if I move the tractor every 3-4 days the lawn doesn't get to messed up, the poop dissappear pretty quick and there's no smell. My backyard looks nicer than it ever has, lush green grass/weed combo lol.

I did have spots that they dug up to dust bathe in so I started putting a bin in there fir them to do that in. Less lawn repair. They still tear the grass up a bit especially around the feeder but it comes back pretty quick.
