Chicken-vention... what inventions have you come up with? (Pic heavy)

nessesaty is the mother of all inventions

here i think chicken curiosity is the mother of all chicken ventions

i got a few will photograph and post tmoz in the day time

:) love the thread

I know I am not the first when it comes to making any thing shown here and do not take the credit but I find it to be fun and enjoyable. Here are a few of the things I have made so far this year for my chickens.

This is the first feeder I made after looking at price tags on some commercial store bought feeders. I made this one from a 5 gallon bucket which was free. I did have to buy the bolts used in securing it together. Total cost for this project came to .97 cents! It works as well as any $25.00 five gallon feeder on the market.

This is what I call my 'ALL PURPOSE' feeder. It can be used for feed, grit, oyster shells, etc. I use mine for grit mostly. I made it from scraps of lumber I already had. The clear plexi-glass front window viewer came from an old bird feeder I had on hand. All from scrap lumber.

This is my trough feeder. After using store bought feeders I noticed a lot of feed ending up on the ground and going to waste. My chickens would either use their beaks or feet and rake the feed out of the feeder only eating what they wanted. Concerned about them getting the full proper diet I designed this feeder. That was the end of wasting feed. I only refill this feeder once it is totally out of food. I know they are now eating ALL the food. Made of scrap lumber so it only cost the price of the few screws.

This is my hen nesting box. I built two sets of these. One is used for my heritage large breed chicken flock and the other which is some what smaller is for my bantam flock. Again, totally made from scrap lumber. I added primer and two coats of high gloss white paint so they will be easy to clean. I have added straw as nesting material.

The front perch makes it very easy for the chickens to get inside.

Last is my outside roost. My flock free ranges in the last afternoon and they take a break every so often and roost on this. It's located beside a large shade tree. I had some wild grape vines growing and it was either to cut them down or make use of them. So as you can see I twisted them around the tree branches and now I can keep them neatly pruned!

Tired of litter in their waterer in the brooder as my chicks grew and became more flighty and active, this waterer solved some cleanliness problems! It hung from the wire grate that covered their brooder, using a small plastic sour cream tub (or whatever)

, some wire threaded thru holes on either side mid-way, a few 350 degree nipples (from eBay, or do search..2 nipples worked well for my 6 girls) and some space to allow empty/refill access for the lid. In less than five minutes, their curiosity (and red colored nipples) had them enjoying their new sippage, and less cleaning for me!

See thats what my dad did w/ a 5 gallon bucket, he has 4 lil nipples on the bottom, they got used to it pretty quick, but they still LOVE drinking and dipping their beaks into a cool pool of water, & their coops right by where the hose goes into the bottom of the house, so when he waters his flowers it drips excess of course so he made a little metal bin for the water to pool down into :)

I also use sand in my chicken run and realized (after buying) a cat litter scoop, that the holes indeed were too big to remove a majority of the poop. So I (did not invent this) but I stumbled upon a make-shift sifter in a food supply store. I'm pretty sure I am the only person that uses it to sift chicken poo!

But it REALLY works great! It gets 99% of all poop, and is fast and effortless to use because of the long handle I don't have to break my back. I have a 5ftx10ft run and it takes 10-15 minutes to sift the entire thing.

THANKS! you inspired me,so I went to a resturaunt supply store and bought these for $6.49 did the whole run in 20 mins got all those little crumbs falling through the kitty litter scoop!
This fry basket whichamacallit works great!!! just scoop and sift goes quick only downfall is it gets all the larger pieces of grit too so the sand is really fine like beach sand, but no more small poo crumbles, now i can wet down the sand to cool the girls off with out getting stinky poo sludge.

RedBarnFarms, very nice items! I especially like the big feeder on the ground.

I love this thread. I didnt think of any of these inventions but I was trying to find low cost/efficent waterers & feeders.

The buvcket is a 5 gallon one I had at home & was not using. I bought the nippples online and used plumbers tape when I screwed them in. One still leaked so I then put some silicone around them and its no longer leaking. I put it in the coop last night & am curious how long it will be before the girls start using it.

My PVC feeder. When I filled it initially it came out the front as I filled it from the top. So its now leaning backwards and it seems to have helped with that problem. I think I am going to buy a cap for the front and cut up halfway so that there is a lip here to prevent food from coming out unless the girls are eating. They took right to it.

That's cool the feeder thingy, looks exactly like our deer feeder with corn out back!
