Our neighbor has one chicken that was bit by probably a fox. It has missing feathers and skin on the butt area. It looks pretty bad. You can see the meat on an area size of a palm of your hand. Despite of the attack the chicken laid an egg two days later, and seems to be fine. Should they take it to the vet? Should they clean the wound by something special, or use any kind of animal medicine on it?
Thank you!

Well I am VERY new at this chicken thing, but I can say that my dog got two of my hens. She killed the first one, however the second one she just tore up the butt real bad. We cleaned the hen up as much as possible and decided to wait and see if she would be ok. We started her on antibiotics and cleaned her daily with water and peroxide... She is a Black Australorpe so her back feathers now have "highlights"! LOL!! She has not started laying again yet but her health is good. My husband and I are paramedics so we know "people trauma"... but this chicken thing is way out of our league! It seams from reading on here that chickens are good at healing themselves. Good thing because I have a lot to learn! I don't know if this helps or not, but I do know that everyone at BYC are very helpful!
Good luck,
Jeannie
