Was walking out with my gun to get the two dogs that were attacking my coop. Heard screaming. My neighbor was helping me, so I asked him to get the two dogs while I grabbed the chicken being mauled by my dogs. No other chickens were hurt, yet I cant find 4 hens. I brought the chicken that was attacked inside and looked her over. She had a nasty wound by her neck, with meat exposed. Her wing was beat up as well. I added some ointment to it. What else should I do? I can't take her to the vet, and I don't want to put her down unless I have to.

How deep/long is the cut on her neck? Has it stopped bleeding all the way?
How does the hen behave (i.e is she eating/drinking/moving/making noise like normal)?

For treating, I would gently wash the wound with slightly warm water and a soft cloth. Then I would apply some antibacterial wound ointment to help prevent infection. Vetricyn is great.

Chickens are pretty amazing recoverers, as I have experienced. I had a chicken that got grabbed by a coon. She broke a few ribs and had a gash about 2-3 in long that was deep enough to expose her backbone. However, she was all back to her happy, normal self by 6 weeks.

I don't know, to be honest. What is Vetericyn?

Vetricyn is a topical wound ointment for livestock. It is very effective on minor injuries and rashes/skin irritations in animals. It is usually a little pricey but one bottle will last for a long time. You can find it on amazon as well as most farm/feed stores.

It hasn't bled yet, and is quite large, yet isn't deep. But darn, we added an ointment that blocks out bacteria, and is pretty good. We used it on our dogs when they got into a fight and were just fine. She eats normally and drinks, loves making a mess of it. I've not heard her make a noise yet(I have left her to herself in my room to help her calm down) except screaming when I was getting her and carrying her around.
