Chicken wire mesh or welded wire fencing ?

I usually get my HC at my local Ace Hardware. Where I am they are much better at ordering stuff in for me, prices are better than the other places. I have 2x4 welded wire in my outside run, but the babies aren't allowed in there until they are big enough not to fit through. The nursery enclosure has 2x4 wire with hardware cloth over it. I only trust 2x4 welded wire to keep the adult chickens in, not to keep anything after them out. Same with chicken wire. Predators will either rip a hole in it or stick an arm through and grab them.

I see what you mean about the price going up on hardware cloth. I ordered 4’x50’ rolls of 1/2” 19 gauge in 2018 for $66 with free shipping from Amazon. Now the same roll is $90.

we have no racooons or snake predators to worry about but we do have a fisher cat that routinely prowls through our area.
No raccoons...did the fisher cat eat them all?
I would use both 2x4 welded wire and the chicken wire, it those are your only options.

Also....
Good examples of anti-dig apron installation.
If rodents are prolific, burying the apron ~12" would be good.

We have no raccoons here, we do have fisher, weasels, muskrats, badgers, coyote, lynx
the ocassional cougar. lots of moose, deer not that they eat chickens.

I did find 16 guage 2 X 2 welded wire and I will also use chicken wire on the bottom half.

Weasels can get thru 2" maybe even with the CW over it.
Might want to think about hot wire for those bigger critters.
